Hi,

I am trying to find out any information about Kenneth (middle name possibly George) Powell who I think served with the 170 and died towards the end of the war.  If you have any info I would be most grateful.

Kevin

Hi

Being an annonymous poster can make it hard to pass on details such as scans of files. Can confirm Kenneth George Powell, if you let me have your email address via my profile, i can send files.

Alan.

Hello there,

176236 P/O.Dennis Jeavons was posted in to 626 Squadron from No.11 Base on 27/8/44.His crew were;

1814186 Arnold David Olson,flight engineer;

1452800 George Henry Bairstow,navigator;

1045740 William Charles Manning Anderson,air bomber;

2201638 Hubert Eugene Bailey,wireless operator;

1571510 David Alexander Thorburn,air gunner;

1344286 Stanley Melville Robinson,air gunner.

P/O.Jeavons flew a second pilot sortie to Stettin 29-30/8/44 and a first sortie with his own crew to Le Havre 5/9/44.

When 170 Squadron was reformed as a heavy bomber squadron on 15/10/44,his was one of two crews from 626 Squadron posted in,along with 'C' flight of 625 Squadron and some crews from 12 and 103 Squadrons.He was involved with his crew in a take-off accident on 1-2/2/45 on a sortie to Ludwigshafen which wrote off Lancaster ME302 'U',although no one was hurt.

I have not yet looked in much detail at the Operational Record Books for 626 or 170 Squadrons,but will be happy to give more information when I have the time.

Hope this is of interest,

Regards,Mark Simpson.

Hi,

I am researching Robert Sidney Bennett from 170 Squadron who is on my village war memorial in Sussex.  I know from other web sites that he was flying a Lancaster bomber serial PB397 from Hemswell.  His target that night was Munich but failed to return.  I wondered whether anyone could give me any further details as to why the plane failed to return.  Also, from the list of 7 crew would it be possible to work out who was the pilot?  There are 3 Flight Sergeants, 3 Sergeants and one Flying Officer from the Royal Australian Air Force.

Many thanks,

Penny

My father was Arnold David Olson. He unfortunately passed away in 1971 due to heart failure. He married Joyce Ellen Kirby in about 1945 she was a nurse at the time!

Best regards,

Steve Olson.

Thanks for the information. Your father flew with my father Sgt Dennis Jeavons. I remember him speaking of Arnie Olsen. My Dad died on the Isle of man  in 1981 from cancer and my mother Freda dies in 2012.
