Red Arrows moving to new RAF base

Red Arrows
The Red Arrows will move to another base in the county

The Red Arrows acrobatic aerial team is moving to a new RAF base in Lincolnshire, the BBC has learned.

The county council has confirmed the team's base will move from RAF Scampton to RAF Waddington.

The official announcement from the Ministry of Defence is expected at the House of Commons on Wednesday as part of a review.

Council spokesman Eddie Poll said the team would still use the air space over RAF Scampton for practice flights.

"We are absolutely delighted that the Red Arrows will be staying as we have a very long aviation heritage in Lincolnshire that we are very proud of," Mr Poll said.

Gerry Connelly, former Air Vice Marshall and station commander at RAF Wittering, said: "We have known that they were going to move from Scampton for a long time.

"It will be good to see the red and white smoke of the Red Arrows south of the city of Lincoln - although the practising will continue over Scampton."

He said the base at RAF Scampton was expected to close as part of a "rationalisation" by the MoD.

The Red Arrows moved to RAF Scampton in 1983, but transferred to RAF Cranwell in 1995 before returning to Scampton in 2000.
