Night Fighter Claim- Stuttgrt 28/19th July 1944
Permalink

Could anyone help me to identify the night fighter pilot who shot down F/O Peabody & crew in L7576 (622 Sqdn) on this operation. According to 'Chorley' the crew were shot down at 01:30 hrs and crashed into woods at Meurthe-et-Moselle near Petitmont.

I have the 'loss card' for the aircraft however, it refes me to a 75 Sqdn Lanc, could anyone advise of the route taken that night.

Thanks in advance

Howard

Hi Howard,

Ive checked out Theo Boitens 'Nachtjagd War Diaries' and cannot find a night fighter claim for Lancaster L7576.

Mike.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your response, I have an evasion report from one of the crew and a night fighter attack was the cause of their demise. I hope something else turns up, my uncle was on the same operation and he believed that he witnessed the attack on the Lanc however, this was near Orleans and quite a way from the crash point?

Many thanks again

Howard

Thanks Mike,

My understanding is that there are several claims around the time this Lanc was shot down, perhaps Theo can narrow it down?

Hello Howard

All BC loss cards for 3 Group losses for that night refer to 75 Sqn NE148 for the route.

I have a copy of this loss card but some of the co-ordinates are not clear.

This is what I can make out;

Base to Reading 4900N/0000W, 4810N/0100E, 4750N/0?00E, 4855N/0730E, 4854N/0??0E, Target.

There were several routes taken.

Here is the outbound route for No.1 Group -the most southerly taken by the bomber force;

Base to Reading, 4820N/0020W, 4730N/0210E, 4740N/0600E, 4850N/0730E, 4854N/0920E, Target

Here is the outbound route for No.5 Group;

Base to Reading, 4948N/0030W, 4820N/0120E, 4812N/0350E, 4850N/0600E, 4900N/0730E, 4854N/0820E, Target

And No.8 Group;

Reading, 4948N 0030E, 4820N 0120E, 4813N 0350E, 4850N 0600E, 4900N 0730E, 4854N 0820E, Target,

(inbound) 4845N 0922E, 4832N 0918E, 4850N 0730E, 4803N 0345E - 4814N 0120E - 4920N 0000E- Reading.

I can send the Operational Research Section report for this night if you wish.

This includes a map of the routes and reported events, e.g. combats.

In his MI.9 debrief report, the air bomber, F/O Fiddick stated that after being attacked by a night fighter (outbound)

and baling out, he landed in a forest about 8 miles s.e. of Cirey-Sur-Vezouse. Is this the report that you have (WO/208/3324)?

As you know, Chorley states the following;

Crashed 01.30hrs into woods possibly known as Pot-de-Vin, between Cirey-sur-Vezouze {Meurthe-et-Moselle, Lorr.} and Petimont.

Regards

Mike W.

Hi Howard,

response from Theo below,

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your mail re. L7576, I have one most probable candidate, no other NJ claims around 01.30 hrs in the area of Cirey-sur-Vezouze fit:

Ofhr. Walter Swoboda: 1 2./NJG6 Lancaster E.-NE Saint-Dié-des-Vosges area (CP): 5.000 m. 01.30 prob. 622 Sqn Lancaster L7576

Cheers, Theo

Thanks to all for identifying the night fighter pilot, I believe this was his first 'kill?'

MIke,

I would very much like to see a copy of the Op Research Section Report if possible.

Many thanks again for the help

Howard

Hi Howard,

Walter Swoboda did not survive the war and was shot down and killed on 17/18 December 1944 by the 204th American Field Artillery Battalion.

Regards,

John.

Thanks John,

I was just looking him up on google, not much there. Did he fly the Me110 or Ju88?

Hi Howard,

Not sure mate as NJG6 flew both types. However as they were at that time used as ground attack aircraft, my guess would be JU88.

Regards,

John.

As the message above is text from one of my posts made in 2012, I suspect it may be some form of spam.

Suggest we try to ignore it.

Hi Howard, My name is Mick Coplen. My Uncle Percy Buckley was killed on this mission. My son was over in France visiting his grave in Petitmont and obtained part of the fuselage. If you could give me your email address I can email you stuff. I am in touch with R.L. Fiddick who is still alive and just celebrated his 98th birthday. His evasion story is fascinating. I have posted it on 622 Squadron's Facebook page. My email address is coplen@esatclear.ie if you would like to get in touch I have photos from a french book of the crash site which was published just after the war. Mick Coplen

Michael,

I have been researching the history of 300 (Polish) Bomber Squadron, so I think that I could help you in searching for details of service of Marian Debicki (780316).

Please, contact me on my e-mail address: Gregor30"at"autograf.pl

Regards,

Greg

Sorry to dredge up an old topic, but I am related to Howard Sherman Peabody who was on this flight and was taken captive later. We are organizing research and other material. I have messaged the 622 facebook ground, as well as Mr. Coplen on this thread. I would be very grateful for any other areas of research we may pursue. I can be contacted at sherman@j3r.org. Thank you in advance!

Mick: my name is Jon Peck and I am a cousin of Sherman Peabody the F/O on L7576. In fact I am currently in Frankfurt after spending the weekend in Petitmont dedicating a plaque at the cemetery for Peabody and Harry Doe. Rick Doe, Harry's nephew was with me and my brother for the dedication. We have also engaged with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and also dedicated a plaque outside the cemetery for the entire flight. Would be good to talk at some point when I am back in Canada (Montreal) later this week. Email is jpeck@pecktech.ca and mobile is +1-514-867-2940. We need to talk! Best regards, Jon
