Can anyone help me find out the fate of Flying Officer D.A. James, RCAF ? He was the Wireless Operator of a Halifax III from 420 squadron that crashed Feb 29th, 1944 in Wales. The bomber had been on a training flight and the pilot lost control during a corkscrew maneuver. There were only two survivors , Sgt Jimmy Willoughby, from Jamaica ( who recovered and went on to be the Flight Engineer on my Dad's crew, flying almost 60 missions with the Coffey crew), and F/O James . His service number was J26859 , and the accident report says he was only slightly injured. I would love to find out his fate, after his miraculous escape from the out of control Halifax.

Thanks all ! Cheers, Clint.

Hi Clint,

If nobody is able to help you, you could write to the Archive in Canada for his service file.

Personnel Records Centre

National Archives of Canada,

Tunney's Pasture,

Ottawa Ontario Canada K1A ON3.

They will provide his service file for you, its a free service but it will take a few months.

Good luck in your search.

Regards,

John.

Hi Clint,

No I have gotten a number of files over the years and I am not related to any of them. They do limit you to one per year bur having said that I did get two Canadians who were both killed on the same aircraft on a raid on Nuremberg on 27/28 August 1943.

Regards,

John.

The "one a year" rule is long changed. I just sent in a dozen.

But you will have to prove that Donald A. James of Toronto has been dead 20 years or they'll give you nothing.

Dave

Hello Clint. James is posted in to 434 Sq at the end of May 1944 and finishes his tour there with, mainly Wright and Magrath.  I have him surviving the war. This coming from the ORB's. Regards, Richard
