Small Bomb Containers / S.B.C.

Can anyone explain to me how these worked? Was there some kind of fuze on them that would break the container open at a certain height, releasing the contents? Or did they break open mechanically when released from the bomb bay...?

Many thanks for the help, Cheers, Clint.

Thanks Dave, that's a great link, but I am still in the dark as to how the S.B.C.'s worked.....Did the whole SBC drop from the airplane and then open up to spew its contents at a certain height? Or did the SBC just open up and the flares etc drop out when the Bomb Aimer pressed the tit to release the bomb load....? If any can shed some light, I would appreciate it ! Cheers, Clint.

Clint

The following film may provide an answer, but it has been a while since I watched it (so apologies if it doesn't) .... I would have watched it again to refresh my memory but I have my family staying at the moment .... anyway, fingers crossed

Hi Clint,

Yes, the SBC's were filled with the incendiaries and when the bomb aimer pushed the bomb release, the bottom of the SBC opened and the incendiaries dropped out.
The SBC's stayed with the aircraft and were returned to the squadron to be filled once again.
I had asked this question years ago, as I too thought the whole thing was dropped.

Cheers,
Wayne.

Thank you Wayne and Pete! Now I think I get it : )

Pete, that film you linked me too was excellent, I had not seen it before....highly recommend others take the time to watch it. Gives one a real insight into the hard work of the Armourers.

Much appreciated guys, cheers, Clint.
