The Flight Engineer on my Dad's crew made the notation (V.C.) next to target names in his logbook. Is it a Pathfinder task, ie Visual Centerer?

Can anyone clarify?

Are you able to access the relevant ORB, as they usually recorded the role of each crew and should therefore prove (or disprove!?) your theory

Visual Centerer would be correct. Which pathfinder squadron are you referring to.
