Hi,

im hoping for more information about my great uncle, unfortunately I have no one left on that side of the family who can tell me more about it.  I believe he was in squadron 166, I know that they were shot down over France and they all survived.

Thank you

Becky

Hi Becky,

 25-26 July 1944

166 Squadron       Lancaster III     JB649  AS-Z          Op: Stuttgart

T/o 2120 Kirmington. All were experienced with the loss card indicating at least 28 sorties flown.

F/O  R  J  B  Cann          evd

Sgt R  S  Drongeson     evd

WO2  N Zuk  RCAF        evd

Sgt  B  J  Taylor             evd

F/Sgt  R  E Storey         evd

Sgt  N  G  Hill                 evd

Sgt  R A Feveyear         evd

(Source: RAF Bomber Command Losses 1944, W.R Chorley.   Note: incorrect initials for Sgt Hill).

From what I can gather Sgt Drongeson was the flight engineer.  The Lanc crashed in the Auxerre area.

Regards,

Mike

His evasion report is available at Kew:

discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C14084351

If you cannot get there yourself there are several people who will photograph the file for a nominal fee. Far cheaper than what TNA will charge.

RCAF crewmember Nickolas Zuk passed away in Winnipeg in 1993. As such his service file can be obtained free of charge.

Regards,

Dave

Thank you both for your help, I would love to learn more about the squad etc but I have no idea where to start or where you get information from.

Hi Becky you might care to email me on mjc41uk@yahoo.co.uk I have the 166 Squadron thread on this site. I am very familiar with your Great Uncle and his crew. I knew John Cann as well in the 1980s. They all evaded capture together. France and accompanied an SAS unit for a time before being brought back to the UK.
