I don't believe the cemetery at St Trond was ever anything but German with the airfield being a nightfighter base for the Luftwaffe. After the war CWGC moved all bodies to other cemeteries chiefly Heverlee. Cwgc no longer lists St Trond on their website

Hello,

There was an allied cemetery on the airfiled of Saint-Trond. I'm 100% sure! The German cemetery was not located on the airfiled. German soldiers/crews were till the end of 1942 buried on the cemetery of Schuurhoven, Saint-Trond. The remains of the German soldiers/crews were transfered to the "Ehrenfriedhof" Brustem (village near the base) at the end of 1942 till May 1948.
The CWGC moved the remains of the allied airmen from the airfield to Heverlee (Leuven) and other cemeteries after the war. CWGC has almost or all the gravenumbers of the allied crewmembers in their files.

Greetings from Belgium

Alexander

I know this is a very old post, but do you still have access to the list of Canadians initially buried at St Trond. I am trying to establish whether Leslie Ernest Carey was buried there. He was a flight engineer who was KIA (we believe over Wandre) on 29th June 1943 [Halifax HR812].

Also, do you have any information relating to the location of the crash site?

Regards

Pete

Hi,

Sorry mate nothing on the pilot, the Kiwi Nav was Sgt Francis Henry Brown. born at Masterton NZ and was employed as a storeman. He trained as a pilot but failed the course at 3 EFTS in 10 Nov 1941. He started training 20 Dec 1941 but was terminated in Jan 1942. Re-musted as a Nav and went to Canada and passed out and left for the UK on 25 Sept 1942.he went to 15 OTU on 31 Dec 1942 then to 1663 HCU 13 April 1943. He was the son of Samuel Adam & Jessie Brown of Ponsonby Auckland New Zealand.

Hello ,

Sgt Carey was indeed buried at the Allied cemetery at the nightfighterbase of St-Trond ( St-Truiden in Dutch ) in grave 250 or 253.
