Maybe somebody can help me with information or the evasion report of WO² Cyril S. Barzacle (or Barzeele) from the 431 Squadron. His Halifax SE-B/MZ629 was shot down in Belgium during the night of 12-13/5/1944. He was hidden by Belgians in Waterloo until the liberation in September. Many thanks in anticipation.
Was Barzacle a member of R.A.F.E.S. as I was? I had a copy of their member dossier until yesterday, but just donated it to the new Air Force Wing of the Calgary Military Museums. But I do not recall his name from my scanning through the pages.
Hi John, Well, I don't know whether Barzacle was a member of the R.A.F.E.S. after the war. I know this airman (navigator) was the only surviving crew member of his Halifax when shot down. And I saw his name misspelled more than once (Barzeele or Barzacle).
It appears as though his crew posted into 431 sqn on April 21, 1944 from 1664 HCU. They flew one operation to Montzen on April 27th prior to being shot down.
On Sept 13/44 "word was received that J86427 P/O C.S Barzeele arrived in the United Kingdom on 10th Sept 1944 and reclassified safe."
Just saw an E-mail address that is for a book outlining the R.C.A.F. P.O.W.'s and Evaders. You might want to try rafproject@hotmail.com to see if they have Cyril S. Barzacle listed. I have not even looked to see if I am on the list.
My uncle, Flying Officer Stuart Preston was the Bomb Aimer on that aircraft. I have a letter written by Barzeele describing the night they were shot down, but have not seen the evader report.
I understand you've been talking to my brother Bill and you've done a considerable amount of research regarding my father. One man who would know everything about my father's service would be a man by the name of Bud Walter, I know at one time he lived in California, and was a pilot for United Airlines. I myself am very involved with the Canadian Military through my business supporting various Military functions. If you would ever like to contact me my address is barzeele@gmail.com or my cell 306-361-6570 or my home number 306-652-1789
I found an old handwritten note in my mother's records. The note mentions:
"We wish to thank you for your kindness to us. May you enjoy your freedom for years to come. Your friends CSBarzeele (RCAF) Lester M. Hutchinson U.S.A.A.F. James Burton (R.A.F.)"
That is all I have and my mother has passed away. She lived on a farm in Vieux-Genappe, Belgium during the war.
