I received this email the other day and thought I would share it with the group....
Hello
I am the daughter of Freddie Watts DFC who died last year aged 87. He served as a pilot on 617 Squadron and 630 Squadron during World War 2 and continued in the RAF until the 1960s. He always felt that Bomber Command had been ignored with regard to a campaign medal specific to them and now that everyone seems to being recognised including the Bevan Boys and the Land Army (who of course contributed to the War effort), I think it is time to get them recognised. They were at the very point of the sharp end and, as you obviously know, over 55,000 died. 30,000 of these brave men are still alive and they should be recognised before it is too late.
To try and stir up some interest I have placed a petition online on the No 10 site:
Frankly, I already have a Bomber Command medal, and it's called the Aircrew Europe Medal. I also have an informal Bomber Command medal with an engraving of a Lancaster on one side. I also have a Defense of Britain MedaL, but I took little part in the defense of the Realm.
I am very proud of the small part I played in Bomber Command, and I do not need more medals to reinforce my pride. I just need a good place to leave them when I "Shuffle off this Mortal Coil".
When one gets into their late eighties, it would be more preferrable to be awarded a low cost source for one's Scotch.
I am glad to sign the petition,as many of my "veterans" have expressed how nice it would be,not because they want to be labelled hero's ,but to represent their friends who lost their lives just "doing their job" defending our country
