I have been researching my Dads uncle Leading Aircraftman Chistopher Thomas McClure who was serving in 502 Sqdn and was killed when his Avro Anson crashed in a snowstorm in the Rhyl/Prestatyn area while returning to RAF Aldergrove on the 19th January 1940.
we have some information
19/01/40 No.502 Sqn Anson I N5050 YG-B Took off Hooton Park at 08:00 hrs for Convoy Escort.
F/O Garrett Sgt H C Moorby AC1 R Beattie LAC T C McClure
Sgt Moorby, AC1 Beattie and LAC McClure died from their injuries
Over the last year we have been trying to find the location of the crash as my Dad is keen to visit the site, if it is possible.
Any help on where to start looking would be appreciated.
Hi John, I have just been looking at the page on BBC Wales N.East re the crash. Did you get any feedback from Helen McClure or other relations etctera? You could try a post on RAF Commands forum. Good Luck!
yes i did we found that we were related and were both researching the same crash..
I am trying to find the site of the crash,so hopefully can pay a visit with my Dad, who was Thomas McClure's nephew, but still not sure whot to contact to try to get some info
Hi Jon, Suggest you contact R.A.F. Museum Hendon and ask if they have a "Loss of Aircraft" card for this aircraft, sometimes but NOT always this will give reference as to the crash site as I have found out relative to aircraft of 431 R.C.A.F. Squadron, they were very helpful to me in gathering ALL of the "Loss of Bomber" cards for this Squadron. Good luck with your search. Bill Heron/Niagara/Canada
