PG-S 619 squadron info sort
Permalink

Hello every one

I am hoping someone will be able to help me source  some detailed info on the last flight of PG-S for Sugar 619 squadron.

The info I have to date is that it took part in the raid on Nuremberg on 30 March 1944, when 94 bombers were shot down and 71 damaged, out of 795 aircraft. one of these being PG-S which crash landed near woodridge on the 31st March 1944.

The reason I seek clarification I painted this picture for my father back in 76, I took the aircraft details from the library at the time. he worked on lancs during the war years

My father has long since parted for pasture new he loved the painting, and I would like to donate it to the telegraph/raf/capaign to possibly have it auctioned so the money can go to the charity the size is approx 3'x2.66".

any help greatly appreciated

if any one has any other sugestion as to a suitable home I would happily consider it

Hi Steve,

These details come from Chorleys Bomber Command Losses, volume 5, page 158.

30 - 31st March 1944, Lancaster 111, PG - S, LM418, Operation ' Nuremburg'.

Take off from Coningsby at 22:13 hrs. Returned from the target area and crashed-landed at Woodbrige Airfield, Suffolk. No one was hurt, but it was reported the Lancaster was totally consumed by fire. Sadly, all were destined to lose their lives on operations before the year was out.

Sgt. Wood**** was the first to fall when his aircraft failed to return from Salbris on the 8th of May 44 while the others were reported missing on the 24th of July 44 in the wake of the 'Kiel' operation. Sgt. Wood****'s place being filled by F/S J. Broll.

The crew list reads as such ..............

Sgt. J. Parker
Sgt. NM Rice
F/S GA Grigg
F/S AD Aumell  RCAF
Sgt. WA Sharp
Sgt. A Dickson
Sgt. JH Wood****

Details from other sources state that this aircraft had 83 hrs on it when lost.

Regards,
John

Further details for the above post.

From what we can see, the remainder of the rear gunners name has been deleted / overidden my typing so I'll will mispell on purpose and hope that it comes out, so you know the sounding of his full name, " Woodkock"

My father, Joe Pollard and the 'K for Kitty' crew from 630 squadron were flying their 28th operation whilst on the op to Kiel, 5 hrs & 10 min, 9,000lbs bomb load.

John
