Aircraft LL840 took off at 23.17 hours on 21st June 1944 from RAF Skellingthorpe, Lincolnshire.

 

Shot down by a night-fighter and crashed at Oene (Gelderland), 5 km East of Epe, where W/O Lane, flying as second W/Op, and Sgt Shorter are buried in the Epe GeneralCemetery.

 

 

S/L Tim B Cole, DFC, Pilot, Squadron Leader, (nicked named King Cole), Pow, was interned in Pow camp Stalag Luft 3, Sagan, Poland, Pow No 6497.

 

Exe F/O Jack Craven, DFC, Navigator, Evaded. (died 1981)

 

P/O Eric James Blakemore, Radio Operator, Evaded returned to England 12th March 1945 landing at Biggin Hill Kent, (after the war he wrote book Seven Year Interlude ISBN No 9781858634463) (died 2002). Last living in Bournemouth or Portsmouth area.

 

W/O John Frederick Lane, Radio Operator/Air Gunner, KIA (the extra crew member) buried in the Epe.  GeneralCemetery. Aged 22, recorded as living in Battersea London. (Perished in plane on crash landing)

 

Sgt Paul F J Hayes, Rear Tail Air Gunner, Pow was interned in campStalag Luft L7 Bankau. Pow No 221

 

 

The quest is still ongoing for information of the whereabouts of the remaining crew members or their families so that they can be told of the monument erected to the memory of the crew of Lancaster LL840
