I have been contacted by a new member (by marriage) in Germany who was about at the site of Wedd's crash and he wishes to find out some more about it.

Hi Phil,

Not sure if this is your man but there was an Australian F/Lt named Rex Henry Wedd who was killed 20/12/1943 while on ops with 156 Sqn PFF:

http://www.156squadron.com/view_aircrew.asp?pCrewId=501

Plenty of information there including every op he flew on, squadron ORB etc

Regards,

Dave

Hi Phil,

You mean the link I posted?

Strange as I just tried it and it worked. You can't click on it so it's best to copy and paste the address into your browser OR

If you go in the main door here:

http://www.156squadron.com

and use their "search" function it will take you to the same place. He's the only "Wedd" on that site.

Best,

Dave

Dave
thanks for the tip which I will now try.
This is the error message I get when I try to use the long address -

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80040e14'
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver]syntax error (missing operator) in query
expression 'AirCrewld='.
/view_aircrew.asp.line 108

I can't really get the hang of this at all

Rex Henry Wedd 408200 was killed on the night of 20/21 December 1943 in Lancaster JA674 whilst attacking Frankfurt.  The Lancaster was shot down by Uffz Werner Rominger (his first victory (abschusse)) of 8./NJG3 at 20.07 hours at Laubach, 25 km SE of Giessen.  The Lancaster exploded in mid-air, the entire crew, of which Flt Lt Wedd was the bomb-aimer, was killed.  5 bodies were found in a forest, one in the main street of Lauter and a year later the 7th body was found in the forest and buried in a shallow grave.

Hope this helps
Regards
Max

Got it!
Loads of information - who, where, why, when. Anyone know what - what each man did? Sullivan, Max tells me that Wedd was the bomb-aimer, but the others?
Still haven't found Herbert's letter.

More and more! Thankyou. Do you happen to know what the others did on the kite?
Sullivan obviously Pilot.

Sorry Phil, my abbreviations must have been too cryptic, so:

Sullivan - pilot
Knox - flight engineer (managed the engines and fuel)
Loder - navigator
Ritchie - wireless operator
Wedd - bomb-aimer
Mason - mid-upper gunner
Hickling - rear gunner

Hope this helps

I did understand the abbreviations but thanks again.
I will, eventually find Herbert's letter and post it here. Fingers crossed.

Rex Wedd was my great uncle - my grandfather's brother.  I've got his framed service medals, and my father has his flight/mission records.

My father, Robert Rex Wedd, has a detailed family tree.  If anyone wants to contact him rwedd@netspace.net.au.

Cheers,

David

Rex was also my great Uncle and that of my brother Michael Rex and sister Anne-Marie. He was the brother of my Grandfather Jack Stanley Wedd. We place a poppy next to his name in the AWM each year.
