I am doing a project for my girlfreind and her brother on their grandfathers lancaster bomber. I am looking for any and all information. This is what I have t the moment...... the lancaster designation was KO G PB524 with 115 squadron, group. Johnn Cunningham was the pilot and the grandfather was Ernie Hart, flight engineer. Thanks
PB524 was a Mk III Lancaster, meaning that it was fitted with Packard Merlin engines built in the States rather than the Rolls Royce Merlins fitted to the Mk Is, there being no external differences. She was delivered to 115 squadron at Witchford in Cambridgeshire between May and September 1944. She was later transferred to 1659 Heavy Conversion Unit at Topcliffe in Yorkshire where crews received their training on heavies prior to posting to squadrons. PB524 was struck-off-charge (ie scrapped) on 6 December 1946.
To find out more about the crew, you'll need to look at the Operation Record Books (ORBs), these list every raid that the squadron went on, the planes involved, the crews flying them, the bomb load, target, take-off and return time etc. They are held at Kew in the National Archives and not easy to access! You may have some success by asking your question on other forums such as http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/ or http://www.lancaster-archive.com/forum/
I am the nephew of John Cunningham pilot of pb524 and have the log book of all his flights plus some photos of his crew including your grandfather if you would like to contact me please do so bobincroston@aol.com
