a few months ago we located the wreckage of Lancaster III - ED 427 - EA - O of 49 Sqn.
It crashed 16./17. April 1943 just outside Laumersheim/Germany into a field and exploded.
The pilot, F/O A.V. Bone and the other crewmembers are still listed as MIA. We found lots of fragments of the aircraft and also some bonefragments.
Who can help us in finding familymembers of the following crewmembers:
Sgt. R.N.P. Foster Sgt C.W. Yelland Sgt R.J. Roondy Sgt R.C. White Sgt R. Cope Sgt B.E. Watt RCAF
Enclosed you will find a radarscan showing the wreckage in the ground.
It is planned to recover the aircraft and the remains of the crewmembers in spring. We are also looking for People who would like to support or finance the recovery since the government has no interest in helping us.
I'd be willing to get Sgt Watt's service records from Ottawa, hopefully that would provide a lead to his family and also a photo. This would take a bit of time however.
Great work and what an excellent website you have.
looks like you have already contacted the 49 Squadron Association and waiting approval to recover whatever you can. Detail should appear on the 49 Squadron Association website below as and when any details are received.
this evening I was talking to the owner of the field, where the british bomber is buried. He gave his o.k. for the recovery. first we have to wait until the field is empty (wheat).
The recovery will start in the middle of July. This gives us some time to get prepared and maybe to find some more relatives.
Isn`t there somebody out there who can help us identifying the plate with the PARTS LIST No. 392222 ??
Alex, (Gate1) is a member over on the Stirling Aircraft Society / Bomber Command Forum, is well regarded in identifying RAF aircraft parts, etc. He has worked on a number of lancaster / Bomber Command aircraft recovery programs. http://stirlingaircraftsoc.raf38group.org/

John

I have corresponded with you previously regarding my father's Lancaster JA 708, shot down September 23rd 1943.
It is my understanding that the crash site is known, do you know if there are any plans on excavating the crash area?

I don't want to hijack the thread but can't see a way to email Uwe direct. Are you a member of an Aviation recovery group near Hamburg? I'm trying to find the crash site of my uncle's plane, Wellington X3757 which went missing on the night of 8/4/1942. I've narrowed the possible sites down to 2, but any help 'on the ground' so to speak would be fantastic.
I have managed to track down 2 families of the crew, but am still searching for the others
I too am able to travel to Germany if you find anything
