My father, Warrant Officer Athol (Jimmy) James of New Zealand flew with 75 Squadron as a tail gunner in Wellington Bombers throughout WWII. He completed several tours of duty over Europe and was also stationed in the Middle East and towards the end of the war was in Canada in a training establishment. He spoke little of his experiences during the war but I would like to be able to pass something of his life on to my son who never had the honour of meeting or knowning him. he did mention "Popeye" on a number of occassions but I'm unsure whether this was the callsign of an aircraft or the nickname of his regular pilot. If anyone out there can help it would be appreciated.
Frederick John (Popeye) Lucas DFC RNZAF was your fathers pilot with 75 (NZ) squadron.
At the moment I can find three ops they flew together in 1940, being to Kiel, Hamburg and Soerst. There will be more, but thats all I have at hand just now.
Thank you very much Wayne. The story of Popeye was great and bought back snippets of conversations my father had had with me. I now remember him talking to me about farmer friend of his from the war who lived in Southland near Queenstown. Dad also memtioned that this person had a number of old Wellington turrets and other aircraft stuff on his property - probably long gone now, but interesting nonetheless.
I also have an idea that my oldest brother may have some of my dad's stuff so I've been in touch to see if he has his log book purchance. I know he has all his medals whereas I have his flying helmet (complete with bullet craze) and his flying suit. I'll see if I can locate any photos as well. If I can source some photos from his war years can I upload them somewhere rather than just attaching them to a post as they may be useful for other people.
At the moment I can't find anything other than the three ops I mentioned in the last post. I have a gap in my info between June 1940 amd December 1941. So if you do find your dads Log Book I would be very interested in the ops he flew durig that time. I would be keen to see any photos you might find as well.
There is a 75 squadron association in NZ, did you know about it?
Wayne. My older brother does have my dad's log book and he's going to scan it and send it to me. I've also got some momentos including newspaper clippings that belonged to my father that I haven't looked at in a long time. I don't remember there being anything from the war years but I might be wrong. I'll dig them out and if there's anything interesting I'll pass it on. I do have some pictures of my father in uniform and some war time class photos with names of the other airmen which could be useful to other people. I'll also dig them out and scan and upload them. Finally, my father was an avid photographer and I have boxes of medium format negatives of his taken during the war. Most are now just clear plastic but I'll see if any can be salvaged.
Contact details are on there for both the UK and NZ Assns. There are only 4 pages as yet but one of the complete pages has the newsletters from both Assns...

Thanks Dee. I did try to make contact with the NZ association by email but failed to get a reply. I'll check out the site and hopefully I can make contact.
Here's a photo of my father (front row 3rd from left) taken in NZ about 1940 with members of Course A Flight 51. Does this help anybody? There's also another that he may have taken. Can anyone identify the people in it?
