I cannot find a way of checking any particular subject so, here goes a bit of raising a very sore subject, going some way to softening the post-war hurt that 2 of my uncles felt - no Command Medal.
This doesn't go towards a medal (it might, I suppose) but at least a memorial, in the open and more public than the one in Lincoln Cathedral. I hope I haven't caused any more hurt.
Please see attached a copy of a page from "The Oldie" magazine.
I meant to mention,as probably the best part of the article, Churchill gets a dresssing down and "Butch" is, in the main, exonerated for the Dresden raids. A Sebastian Cox, head of the Air Historical Branch of the RAF since 1996, has revealed a document showing that it WAS Churchill who gave the order. Harris loyally supported Churchill by not revealing his part in ordering the Dresden raid, loyalty which was NEVER reciprocated. Bomber Command Memorial, clear "Butch" Harris over Dresden, - Bomber Command Medal???? (Ha ha ha), after all it would only cost a few quid now that nearly everyone concerned has gone. Both my Uncles have.
It looks like a really interesting article but it's a bit difficult to read. Could you post a larger copy and/or let us know which edition of The Oldie it is from?
I will try and do an attachment. The copy I originally made was A$ and still is. I don't know why what is shown on te notice board is so small and apparently not able to be enlarged.
Here goes for a larger attachment:-
NO I cannot manage this, in fact I cannot find ouy how I managed it the first time !
Oldie magazine - June 2011 edition
I will now go and practice and see if I can remember what to do. (no not THAT) attaching photos.
I always have to explain to folk why l dont regard Churchill as a National Hero.
To my mind, he stabbed Harris and the Bomber Boys in the back.
I have read many books on Bomber Command, and they all say he betrayed Harris.
I intend to be present when that memorial is finally unveiled, but l expect it will get red paint thrown over it like the Harris statue by some do-gooder.
Sad that our boys have been forgotten by successive governments.
Hear this...........the families will never forget.
