Lost over Holzhausen Germany night of October 22nd 1943 on Bombing mission to Kassel. have located the buriel place of my Uncle ( John Cahill ) in Hanover War Cemetry but would love to visit the site of the crash if anyone knows if it even exists at this late stage or any details about its loss as documented details just say it crashed at Holzhausen
The target for 22/23 Oct 43 was Kassel. 130 Halifax from 4 Group joined other aircraft from 1,5,6 & 8 Group to attack the city.
Target marking by the Pathfinder Force was excellent which allowed for a concentrated attack on the target. Large areas of the city's residential district were completly destroyed and a fires storm was created as a result. The Henschel aircraft factories were seriously damaged, which were in the process of preparing for the full scale production of the V1
Bomber Command losses were high; 48 aircraft were lost, 243 aircrew KIA, 7 were injured and 80 became POW
I researched the crash of Lancaster ED366 AS-C near my former homevillage Obermeiser, Germany. The crash of Halifax LW 297 is not far off. If anyone is interesting, I could looking for more.
