Lancaster Bomber PB200 (Mk.III OF-G, lost 10.11.44)

Hi all, I've been trying to discover as much as I can about my great-uncle's Lancaster PB-200 which was lost on 10th November 1944 at Cernay-en-Dormois.  I've written to the RAF and received a reply which suggested that they believed the a/c was brought down by United States Army ground fire.

Is there any more info that I can get, regarding either the crash, the aircraft or my great-uncle or is that the end of the road?  My great-uncle was John Negus, an air-gunner (though F/O rank, we believe because he had done some pilot training).

Anything that anybody could share with me would be incredibly useful, particularly as I'm hoping to make the pilgrimage to Cernay en Dormois, perhaps next month, to see the site of the crash.

Thanks in advance to anybody that can help!

James

Edited to add: John was 97 Sqdn. when he died, out of Coningsby I think.

James,

have you tried contacting the 97 Squadron Association.

http://www.97squadronassociation.co.uk/

You probably have seen the Dover War Memorial project with a dedication to F/Sgt Welham and the crew.

I note that 97 Squadron lost three aircraft on that training exercise, PB200, PD200 and PB450. If you haven't done so already, it may be worth investigating all three losses to see if there were any common denominators.

Regards

Pete

Yes, my father spoke to them some time ago, and was able to give them some photos that a Olivier Housseaux had given us (he being somebody who investigates crashes in the Marne region, though I fear he may no longer be doing this).

I also found the Dover site, thanks - don't think there's much more out there, though will get over to the memorial soon I hope. When Mr Housseuax went he was able to find some parts of the Lanc still in the top soil.

Thanks for your help.

James

Hi James,

According to Bill Chorley's Bomber Command losses they were lost on a training mission over France. The claim that the Yanks shot them down may well be right as no night fighter put in a claim for their loss.

He could have done pilot training but rising to the rank of F/O most likely was he had leadership qualities.

Good luck,

John.

Just reading this in 2021. Don'T know if you found any information you were seeking? I too am looking for more about the a/c crash. A member of the crew of that Lancaster would have become my uncle if he had survived. My aunt (mum's sister) was hoping to marry after the war. She was devastated by the death of Sargent Flight Engineer John Henry Ace and his colleagues. I have a picture of Johnny in uniform, including his white banded forage cap, which I believe indicated cadet or training status? Any information would be welcome. Thank you.
