Sorry to hear about your loss ... you may already have this but the 166 order of battle for the night is available on: http://www.aircrewremembered.com/raf1944/4/singletonbernard.html along with a sentence on the loss (talking about No 1 Squadron SAS helping out with their escape).

You have found the 166 expert on here so hopefully he will have information for you.

He was my uncle and sadly past away on Sunday, (91) and I am giving his eulogy next week.

He was a mid-gunner in a Lancaster of 166 squadron and during a mission to Stuttgart on the 25th/26th July 1944 when the plane was posted missing. The crew all bailed out over France and apparently all survived. The planes call sign was Zebra.

Hugh hide in a barn for a few days until the farmers daughter helped him with his wounds. i believe he was looked after by the French until the allied forces pushed the Germans out.

He would never talk too much about the experience and I am wondering there're is any information available? Such as where the plane came down.

the following info from W.R Chorley's Bomber Command Losses 1944.   Note: incorrect initials for Sgt Hill.

 

 25-26 July 1944

166 Squadron       Lancaster III     JB649  AS-Z          Op: Stuttgart

 

T/o 2120 Kirmington. All were experienced with the loss card indicating at least 28 sorties flown.

From what I can gather the Lanc crashed in the Auxerre area.  The link below maybe of interest:-

I cannot find any night fighter claim for JB649.

Hi,

Sorry to hear of your loss.

I can't add much but according to Oliver Clutton-Brock's book RAF Evaders, Sgt H G Hill 1836287 reurned form Orleans with 1 SAS.
