My father was Sgt.1178418 James Walter Gilbert air gunner of Lancaster JB479 serial GT-K piloted by W/Cdr Eric Porter of 156 Sqd. Flying from Warboys. On 24/25 Feb.1944 they were 1 of 3 Pathfinders to lead the raid on Schweinfurt unfortunately they we're shot down and all killed.( for more details refer to www.aircrewremembered.com Porter-Eric.html) I have read on one of your previous posts that involved another aircraft piloted by F/O Neighbourgh who was 1 of 3 lead aircraft on this raid and was also shot down. I would be more than pleased if anyone has any knowledge of my father to contact me as little is known as to how his plane meet it's end. Peter Gilbert son.
Thank you so much for replying,I would be only too pleased to be in contact over this,I only know what my late mother told me and from books and research on websites. I would love to find out more on these very brave men who gave their lives for their country. You can contact me whenever you wish either by this site or by email. Regards Peter Gilbert
Mike I did get your email on my address (gilbo2109@icloud.com),I see it's marked no reply, but I have tried it seems to have worked,I think? I have numerous things to talk about, which I would like to do on a private site as there are things I don't want to be in the public domain. If I can make contact I will let you have my phone no.etc. Pete Gilbert
I know you've received the Operational Research Section reports and I've also found in my collection a copy of the combat report filed by Eric Porter's crew after the Berlin raid of 2/3rd Jan 44.
They had two encounters on the homeward journey and claimed to have damaged the enemy aircraft in the first. I think you said that there was no mention of combats in your father's logbook - I guess some did and some didn't. Leonard Pillinger, as air bomber recorded the two occasions when his crew were involved in combats.
Your father is mentioned as mid upper gunner.
The crew were assigned as secondary blind markers - it might be interesting to cross-refer to the Warboys ORB and the marking plan recorded there.
Mike I do recall my mother telling me about a combat, she did say that the oxygen supply was damaged to all the crew and they only just made it back and had a few days sick leave. I don't know if this was the combat that she was talking about or another incident. Will send photocopies of Dads papers when you get back. Enjoy your break and many thanks Pete
