Flt Sgt Lawrence William O'Byrne DFM

Newbie here so please excuse any errors I make !  Researching the WW2 service history of my late uncle Lawrence (Larry) O'Byrne service # 1584801.  He was a flight engineer with 626 Sqn in 1944 at RAF Wickenby and was awarded an 'end of tour' DFM.  However family history indicates this may have been for a more specific act - management of the damaged fuel system of the Lancaster that enabled the aircraft and its crew to return to base.  If anyone can shed any light on this or what he did from signing on to being discharged from the RAF, then I'd be very grateful.

Dave,
He was posted from 12sqdn, in to 626sqdn on 7th Nov, during the squadron's formation in November 43. He and his crew did their tour of 30 ops, the first being on 10th Nov, to Modane, and their last was to Gelsenkirchen on 12th June 44. He was then posted to 28 OTU on 3rd July. Although i cannot find anything that clearly links his DFM to any incident, his aircraft did have engine trouble on the infamous Nuremburg Raid of 30th March 44, which caused them to abandon the mission. His DFM was announced in the Oct 44 issue of The London Gazette, and indicates 626sqdn as the unit when awarded.
Alan.
