GRS was my uncle.  I'm eager to understand more about his regrettably very brief service and how he died.  He was a WO/AG.

thank you for advice!

Hi Iain,

Chorley's book on Bomber Command losses states the aircraft took off at 1431hrs. While at 17,000 feet the port engine exploded causing the Wellington to dive steeply. On regaining control and after leveling out the oil pressure fell on the starboard motor. Bombs were jettisoned but height continued to be lost and the order to bail out was given. Sgt Saville has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. The remained of there were made pows.

Regards,

John.
