I am trying to find some information regarding a crash of a Wellington bomber X3424 that my great uncle was involved in on Aug 18, 1943 at 23 OTU Pershore. The only info I have is the plane ID X3424, and that my uncle P/O H D Paddison and P/O F M Potter were unhurt. Any additional info that could be provided would be greatly appreciated.
T/O 2355 Pershore for night training. Landed circa 0135 and the throttles were advanced to go round again. However, the power decayed and the instructor cut the throttles. However, he was unable to prevent the bomber from running off the runway and into a tree. Extensive damage was done to the port wing and the back of the aircraft was fractured. P/O Paddison RCAF went on to fly Halifaxes and lost his life on operations to Berlin in January 1944 (see Bomber command Losses, volume 5. page 41).
If anyone is following this thread, I managed to get a copy of the flight log of the pilot (my great uncle) and can confirm that the Wellington III Serial # X3424 was indeed coded WE-V in 23-OTU.
