Halifax LW648 Bomb symbol?

Hi,

can anyone help identify the symbol that appears on the nose of Halifax LW648 'The Black Prince' so named in honour of it's Nigerian wireless operator.

The symbol I am interested in appears above the fifth bomb on the photo below?

I don't think it's an ice cream cone for an op on Italy. The key signifies the aircraft's 21st op, the bombed capped with a D is for D-Day coastal battery bombing.

Regards,

Mike

I am guessing Marcel has been in touch with you.

I suggested that he obtained a copy of the squadron ORB so that we can establish when that operation was (thereby providing a possible clue to the lettering)

Regards

Pete

Hi Pete,

Marcel has been in touch. I managed to find him all 66 ops carried out by LW648.  The fifth op looks to be Frankfurt.

Regards,

Mike

If the information on the tally for D-Day is correct, then the symbol in question, denotes flak damage on the night of 22/23 March over Frankfurt.

Hi together,

thanks for all your replies. That has been teamwork. What kind of symbol is it? I cannot identify what it actually shows? Are these letters?

@ Alan: Thanks. Why does the conclusion of damage depend on the correct identifying of the d-day symbol? (I just want to learn ...).

Greetings to Pete who is always a good help.

Bye.

Marcel

Just following up on one other point, were you able to confirm that the dark bombs represented night raids and the light ones, day raids?

Regards

Pete

By counting back from 6th June through the operations record book, the date of the Frankfurt raid matches that of the symbol in question.

Hi,

thanks.

I am still working on the dark and light ones, Pete. I would check for the dark and light ones when I am sure that I have all in the correct order.

I wonder if I have all attacks.

Thanks to all who help.

Marcel

You appear to have a copy of the ORB, but you say that there is no mention of the flak hit, and wonder if my information is correct. Not all information is put next to the aircraft in the Details of Work sections of the ORB, and if you look at the Summary of Events pages for the Frankfurt operation on the 22nd March, you will see that it states that aircraft "A" P/O Watt, Captain, sustained flak damage to his flaps but managed to fly the aircraft home. The target for 31/10/44 was Cologne.

Hi everyone,

just to throw the spanner in the works, after checking the caption for photo that appears in the book 'To See The Dawn Breaking' by W R Chorley.

It says " The mark above the fifth symbol indicates when LW648 was struck by an anti-aircraft shell on operations to Lille 9-10 April 1944"

I understand Lille was the 9th operation.

Regards,

Mike

Hi Mike,

i've counted through LW648's ops since she first appears in the ORB, and the flak hit was definitely on 22nd March to Frankfurt. Unfortunately, even Mr Chorley has errors in his work.

Alan.

just noticed that after rejoining the group, i've been demoted from A/Cmdr down to a lowly Corporal....

ha ha

Hi again,

thanks again.

@Adoubleyoo: I do not have the complete ORBs, only the entrys of the aircraft showing the crew and details of operation. I do not have the summary etc. Can you send me the section where the flak hit is mentioned? It is really a problem not to have the whole ORBs, but with the help of you all it seems to work, thanks.

Concerning the dark and light colors of the bomb I do not find a pattern. When looking at the time of take off and landing, it does not match, I think.

Did anybody find out which kind of mark it is above the aircraft, showing the flak hit?

Bye.

Marcel

There seem to have been quite a lot of V1 sites as target: I have found this document about these sites. Maybe someone is interested ...
