s5k lancaster bomber walter mccluskey

I have an old photograph of my granddad it says on back long live s5k. I looked at Lancaster squadrons there isn't a s5k and I cant find my granddad on war records . I all know is at some point here was in India in 1944 says it on back of photo. he was a sergeant machine gunner / radio operator I just like to find out what missions he was on anyone help me

the writing on the back maybe s51t not sure about k or 1t are there any sites where you can look for Lancaster crews or squadrons. is the number a crew number or squadron number

Have you applied for his service record? (see www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records/overview for how to apply). This will provide details of his RAF trade, training and operational postings.

Once you have this, you will be able to utilise other records (such as Squadron Record Books) to drill down to find out about his operational service.

It is worth noting that if the next of kin applies you will receive far more information.

Do you have his full name as he will appear on AIR78 (National Archives) if he served with the RAF. You can do an online search for him, or download the relevant file for free discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C2132
