From a letter to Cosgrove's father from the OC No. 625 Squadron:
"Unfortunately, the aircraft was intercepted by an enemy fighter and was shot down at 2.30 hours this morning, in close proximity to its base and just before it was due to land. The aircraft crashed to the ground, the entire crew being killed instantaneously"
