I was hoping someone might be able to tell me a bit out the WW2 Canadian overseas aircrew pay system. I am specifically interested in the 1) pay rates for the different ranks, 2) were they paid in cash , in dollars? Or in local currency? and 3) How did overseas airmen get money home to their wives back in Canada? Was it sent in cash or was there some kind of wire transfer system?
Most had a monthly allotment, say $20.00 sent home. This was done by the RCAF although I have seen a couple of cases where a bank draft was purchased, in Canadian dollars, and mailed home.
I have several dozen service files with the bank books of KIA airmen. Plenty from the London branches of the Bank of Montreal and the Royal Bank of Canada.
Service files also showed rate of pay and war gratuities paid survivors.
Thanks Dave!
Can you give me any idea of the actual rates of pay in '44? I am just wondering how much of a raise there was for Dad going from F/Sgt in the spring of '44 to Flt.Lt. in September of the same year.
Great info, much appreciated.
Cheers, Clint.
