I wish the film companies would produce more WW2 movies. So many brilliant stories. If they are well done people will go and see them like Saving Private Ryan which did big numbers at the box office.
Most Hollywood stuff they put out these days is truly awful...heard someone say recently...after watching some of them you need a visit with a shrink.

I'm surprised that none of you mentioned "A Bridge Too Far" authored by Cornelius Ryan, which I feel was one of the best World War 11 movies, and very factual, as compared to "The Great Escape" with it's American accent.
When I was a Kid, I saw a movie called "Born for Glory" which was about the Royal Navy in World War 1. I have always wanted to see it again. anybody ever hear of it?
If you put it into google and then put for example-Bomber Command,Lancaster Bombers,Halifaxes etc into the search box, it will bring up small film clips.
There are also a couple of good interviews with ex Bomber Command Veterans.
Some of the clips are from newsreel footage and others seem to be "stolen|" from other sites but on the whole quite interesting.

There is virtually no limit to what you can find on You Tube.
Great topic, I like films that are based in reality and not rewritten propaganda pieces like Pearl Harbour or U571. I will watch bad films like Pearl Harbour to see the great effects but they do not rate as favorites to me.
1) Enemy at the Gates - captures the bleakness of Stalingrad beautifully with very little Hollywoodisms
2) Das Boot - no better submarine movie has ever been made
3) Where Eagles Dare - Clint Eastwood classic
4) The Dirty Dozen - I'm a big Lee Marvin fan
5) The Big Red One - again Lee Marvin
6) The Battle of Britain
7) A Bridge to Far
8) the Dambusters (really lookign forward to the remake)
I wonder what the re make of The Dambusters will be like, especially as they are going to be all politically correct and re name the dog!
I think they have started filming now but does any one know any details or who the actors are going to be?
I hope they keep the music!
No word so far on the actors, one thing we know for certain with jackson steering it there will be exceptional attention to detail. It'll also likely be 3 hours long too!
The whole dog's name thing is silly, do we really need to know the dog's name in the film or even have the dog in there to begin with? Gibson can refer to the dog as "boy" if need be, seems a logical compromise.

Band of Brothers was a great miniseries, I suppose we should maybe run a separate thread to poll the best miniseries ever made. My pick would be Band of Brothers for that one, I also like Piece of Cake, a series about the Battle of Britain.
I've often thought that a great miniseries could be made about Bomber Command, start it off with early raids in Blenheims, the debacle with the Manchester, the thousand bomber raid etc.
I think another great idea would be a minseries on the BCATP (this one is likely much less expensive) perhaps from the standpoint of the Instructors AND pupils.
All I need is $40-50 million and I'm on my way.....
I notice Index 434 mentioned ’12 o’clock’ high in his list, I would really like to support its inclusion. If you haven’t seen it, you must catch it.It is about the Eighth Air force, but I am sure anyone interested in the Bomber Offensive would enjoy it.
It is based on a true story – the casualties suffered by the 306th BG shortly after they began operations from England. It tells the story of a new commander being posted in to the 918th BG (306 x 3!) and how he tries to turn them around. It was written by an officer who served with the unit and is, I think, the most accurate portrayal of the Eighths offensive (much better than Memphis Belle - modern version - imho) It is also an absolute classic study of leadership styles - I actually first saw this during my own officer training.

Yes, it is a very worthy inclusion.
It was run on the History channel over here last year, the host for the movie spoke to a man who served in RAF Bomber Command, the only war movie that he would pay any attention to was this one.
Haven't any of you guys ever seen Catch 22? It was about the U.S.A.A.F. 15th Air Force in Italy. Catch 22 meant that you could get ou of flying on operations if you could prove you were insane. But, if you had the capability of proving that you were insane, then you were sane enough to fly operations.
I agree that "12 )'Clock High was an excellent movie, and very realistic for the 8th Air Force. I copied it from the Public Channel and have it now. Almost time to waatch it again, and thanks for reminding me.
However, I still think the best two war movies are "Dad's Army" and "Allo, Allo" The first because Dad's Army were trying to catch me while I was doing Evader training out of Dalton. The second because the French Resistance kept the German Army equivalent of Dad's Army from finding me.
Once you've seen all the blood and gore, it's time for a bit of humor.

John, thanks for the tip on thsoe films, I'll keep an eye out for them.
Do you recall if your training at Dalton was referred as "Battle School"? My cousin's service record noted that he went to "Battle School" at Dalton for about 8 days just prior to going to 1666HCU.
Yes Matt, Dalton was called Battle School where we learned how to evade if we were ever shot down. It paid me very well from what I learned there as I never let the German searchers get a glimpse of me.
We were taken way out in the country, let off, and told to make our ways back to base. Dad's Army was assigned the task of catching us and ours to avoid them. There were rumors going around that we would be stripped naked and dumped in the local gaol.
On the final operation, all the airmen found a bus going to Middlesborough, so we went there, drank all night, and took the train back home. Cost us all a week confined to station. We went on to #1659 C.U. at Topcliffe.

I don't really like watching war movies because it gives me sad emotions. I prefer modern movies especially musical ones like https://cinemakeren.id/miranda-sings-live-your-welcome-2019/. This movie gives a great mood and pleasant emotions. You can watch it right now absolutely for free.
