Had Been Missing Since Raid
on Germany Last July-

J. D. and Mrs. Rattray, 242 Prov.
ince street south, have been advised
that, for official purposes, their
only son, Sergt. Norman McInnes
Rattray, was reported as missing
following bombing operations
over Germany last July 27, is now
presumed dead.
Sergt . Rattray enlisted to the
R.C.A.F . in February, 1941, and
received his training at Brandon,
Calgary and Macdonald, Manitoba,
where he graduated as a wireless
operator air gunner in October of
that year . He proceeded overseas
shortly after graduation and he
took part in many raids over enemy
territory during his months in
Britain.
He attended the A. M. Cunningham
School, the Hamilton Technical
Institute and the Ceneral High
School of Commerce and prior to
his enlistment was employed at
the Steel Company of Canada. He
was a member of the Pathfinder 149
Club of Delta United Church.
Serg,. Rattrays father served
as a pilot with the Royal Flying
Corps in the first Great. War.
Besides his parents, one sister, Doreen,
survives.

Sgt Rattray hailed from Hamilton, Ontario. He was the son of Joseph D. Rattray, and Elizabeth nee Swift. Joseph is described in contemporary newspaper reports as a "pilot in the Royal Flying Corps in the First Great War"

Joseph Duncan Rattray has an RFC file at Kew.

Of interest to you will be that he had a sister named Doreen. Another sister, NormaJean was born post-war. Sadly, both are now deceased. Doreen, earlier this year:

To introduce myself, I am Bill Grahlman , President of 447(City of Hamilton)Wing, Royal Canadian Air Force
Association.
I am happy to tell you that I hit the "jackpot" on my very first phone call to try and locate relatives of Sgt. Norman McInnes Rattray. I talked to Laurene Rattray and before I mentioned that there was a sister by the name of Doreen, she mentioned her. She could not give me much information on Norman but gave me another name whom I phoned. Laurene's phone number is 
As it so happens the gentleman who I talked to was a cousin of Norman, his name is George Rattray, 93 years old and lives at:        "43 Tragina S.Hamilton". His phone number is  . He would love to hear from you and your Uncle Keith.

Hi,

W7760 may have been shot down by Ofw Hans Berschwinger of 4./NJG2 for his 6th victory. He claimed a Halifax at 02.04hrs,  20 km out over the North Sea north of Wangerooge. It may also have been 78 Sqn W1184 which was also lost without trace. Berschwinger had a total of 12 victories before he was killed in an air combat at Radel on 15 Feb 1944.

If any one knows Victor please let him know I am trying to obtain a photo of his cousin Norman McInnes-Rattray of Hamilton!

Norman Died alongside my Uncle in July 1942 when their Halifax Bomber crashed into the North SEa and never found!

Any help from any source will be gratefully received!
