I've been researching my late Grandfather Sgt F.R.Hindle 646157 15 OTU (Unsure of Squadron Unit if he was attatched to one?) in POW Camps L3/L6/L4/357, PoW No.417.for the past 2 1/2 years now and I am seeking pictures and other information/stories anyone might have of him.
His Aircraft & Aircrew were a Wellington W-5586 LS-U from RAF Harwellwhich crashed in Waasmont , Belgium on Saturday 30/05/1942. 566097 W/O J E Hatton102095 P/O J Harper 937296 F/S R Hill 405035 Sgt R J Collins RAAF
Ive been lucky enough to gratefully receive the above information but now im seeking pictures of him and his aircrew hopefully with the Aircraft/Aircraft on its own, POW camps he was in and any other info/pictures especially of the RAF Harwell base. This would make a nice closure in researching himself and his Aircrew.
Many Kind regards to the Veterans and to everyone. Simone - Western Australia swroe at bigpond dot net dot au -
T/O 2340 Harwell. Believed shot down at 0215 by Oit Reinhold Knacke, 3./NJG1. By 7 July 1942 Mrs Hatton had receied a postcard from her husband advising that he was a prisoner of war, and undergoing treatment for a broken ankle. Sgt Collins returned to the United Kingdom on, or by, 1 uly 1942. It is much suspected that their aircraft had been used to train crews destined for service in the Middle East
W/O F R Hindle was held in camp L3 number 417 (I assume that was his POW number but may be wrong)
Simone, I'm sure you have pictures of Bundrock and Knacke, if you require higher resolution then I could supply a couple before and after touch ups of these two individuals. The photos were supplied to me privately (scanned). Alan
The W5586 was shot down by Helmut Niklas of 6/NJG1 and his aircraft was hit by one of the gunners during the fight (C.2031/I, Reel Nr.101566/43). He had to do an emergency landing on the airfield of Saint-Trond. He was severly wonded and spent some time in hospital. He couldn't fly for a while. After this he left the 6/NJG1 for another NJG unit. Got KIA on 30.1.1944 during a day operation! W/O hatton was found the day after by the Germans in the village of Dormaal (a few kilometers from Landen). Somebody told me he had a broken leg but he was obviously wrong because it's an broken ankle! Oberleutnant Reinhold Knacke of Stab I/NJG 1 shot a Halifax on 30/31 May 1942 (02.04 Hrs) 3 Km ESE of Weert, Holland. His second victim was a Wellington shot down ( 02.30 Hrs) 3 Km SW of Middelbeerer, Holland. The W-5586 was shot down around 03.11 Hrs by Helmut Niklas. Sgt Collins was helped by the Belgian underground and could escape the Germans through Spain and Gibraltar. He arrived in the UK around half July/end of July. Thanks Bob for the information about the postcard of W/O Hatton and the destination of this crew for the Middle East!!!!!!! The postcard was very probably send by the Red-Cross....??? Or not!! Very interesting for my research! Info about the claims: 1) Luftwaffe Night Fighter Combat Claims 1939- 1945 by John foreman, Johannes Mattews, Simon Parry Published 2004 2) Historical Museum air base Brustem 3) Die deutsche Nachtjagd by Werner Held and Holger Nauroth Published 2005 4) http://www.lesbutler.ip3.co.uk/tony/tonywood.htm claims 1942 Greetings from Belgium Alexander

Very interesting. I could also find 3 other sources for this claim:
1) Book: "De luchtoorlog boven België" (Airwar over Belgium) from Cynrik de Decker. 2) A Study of the air base of Saint-Trond (Brustem) by a Lt of the Royal Military school in 1984. 3) crashes database of the Royal Military Museum of Brussels
This means we have 7 sources who mention Helmut Niklas as "Killer" of the W-5586.

I'll receive a translation of the interrogation report of Unterofficier Wenning, the radio operator of Helmut Niklas soon. The report gives a description of the aerial combat with the crew of the W-5586. Will also have the exact crashlocation in Waasmont soon! The info about the broken leg of W/O hatton comes from the former Belgian Underground.
Greetings from Belgium

Finally get to pop back in and say a big thank you for all your help regarding the information on my late Grandfather its nice to know we can learn about them and the War itself from all accounts and both sides as well.
I have a copy of him in uniform which is great, I'm now tracking down RAF Harwell pictures of what it was like 31 May 1942 era.
Will keep searching and thank you to you all its been a great help.
Dr Theo Boiten in his first volume of the Nachtjagd War Diaries gives Oblt Reinhold Knacke the claim for the loss of Wellington W5586 which crashed 10km east of Weert for his 18th victory he would go on he would end up with 44 victories before being killed 3/4 Feb 1943 near Achterveld/Ede by return fire from a Stirling. The Aussie on this flight, his crash file and service file are on line at the National Archives of Australia in Canberra by using his service number you can look at his file this may help you.
hi there, Ive been going through some old photos etc that belonged to my grandfather. Amongst them is a silver coloured cigarette case which has been engraved with a map of India and surrounding countries and a picture of the Taj Mahal. Along the top its engraved with W/O HINDLE. R.A.F.
Ive no idea why or how my grandfather came into possession of this. Do you think it could have been your granfathers.
