Memorials

Dear Matt:

I wonder if I can get any assistance from you or your Forum members.  It has to do with flags.

In June of 2004, I was in the small hamlet of Chandelles in France.  I was doing a Commemorative Service for a young Canadian Fighter Pilot who crashed there on January 28, 1944, after shooting down as many as 5 German planes.  He was buried with no identification but is listed at Runnymede as Robert Oswald Brown.

Recently I received a communication from the Mayor of the village close to Chandelles (Coulombs) saying they had erected a memorial to honour Brown, as well as the other 8 Airmen killed in their community during the war.  Of the nine, only one is Canadian, one is American, three are English, 3 are New Zealand, and one is Australian.

The last seven were from a Lancaster of 115 Squadron and which exploded over Chandelles on June 1, 1944.  The American was in a P-38 which was attacking a railroad bridge, on July 14th, just when an earlier bomb exploded below him.

I have photos showing the memorial, which I will send you on your personal E-mail (cannot seem to get them to drop here).  One shows the Memorial with three flags flying over it; Canadian, French, and American.  This was taken on November 11, 2005.

Where are the Union Jack, the New Zealand, and the Australian flags?  I have set myself the little task of finding these three flags and presenting them to the Mayor of Coulombs (Michel Lesimple) so they can fly them on Remembrance Days.  I have E-mailed the countries involved, but with limited success so far.

I am now seeking help in this project.  Besides honouring all nine Airmen, this will all complete my story of "The Boy from Daysland".

Hopefully

John

I wonder if anybody knows the background of Clarence J. Moore, who was probably with the U,S.A.A.F. when he was flying a P-38 fighter and crashed into a store in Lormaye after attacking a railroad bridge. Apparently he just got to the bridge as the bomb from the plane ahead 3exploded.

He is also on the memorial and is buried in the American cemetary at Colleville-Saint- Laurent-sur-Mer, in Calvados.

You might want to pose that question here.

Hello Bill:

Sorry to take so long to get back to you on the flags.  I'm not certain of the size but they would be about 20" x 40".  However, if you would send me your E-mail address, I will send you a copy of the photo I have with the flags.  My E-mail is nealpigeon1@aol.com.

John
