Hello ,

On 28/04/1944 F/S Edward Fanahan Sheehan RCAF  R/172051  flew as the bombaimer on Halifax LV-783 from No 51 Sqdn.The entire crew was killed when the aircraft crashed at Moelingen Belgium. Who can help me with additional information on F/S Sheehan ?

 Hi Matt ,

I know already that F/S Sheehan was initially buried at the German airfield off St-Trond in Belgium. After the war he was brought tho the Heverlee War Cemetry in Belgium , some 30 miles east of St-Trond. Any other info about him is always very usefull , picture , personel record files etc.

I can confirm that he was originally buried on the Allied Cemetery of Saint-Trond, Belgium.
Somebody can perhaps tell us where he joined the RCAF...and who knows...details about the bomber command loss card, ORB...etc

I can order his service records for you, but it'll probably take about 6 weeks to get. Given the date that he was lost there is a good chance that there will be a photo of him in his file. To get a copy of the photo takes even longer. How fast would you need the info?

I only got the request in two weeks ago, it usually takes 6-8 of weeks. Now that you've mentioned it, I was supposed to hear back about the photo and never did, I'll look into it!

I contacted the guy I use, he is going to get the records and if there is a photo in the service records, he will have a copy made. I'll keep you posted but you should have the info in hand by Decemeber.

My research guy has copied the service records for F/S Sheehan and there is a photo of him  in the file. I should have the photo and records in hand within a week or so, if you can send me your mailing address I can post them to you or I can scan the documents and email them to you if you prefer.

Hello,

One of the crewmembers survived the crash:
F/O McKean R P. RCAF (EVD).
The Belgian Underground took care of him but I can't find any trace of him among the Canadians who escaped through the "Comète Line". Lots of the keymembers were taken prisoner by the Nazis begin 1944 and the line wasn't really active anymore in April 1944. So the possibilty is almost 100% that F/O McKean R P. was hidden by different members of the Underground and that he stayed in Marathon camps in the Ardennes. This is probably mentioned in the "interrogation report" of his personal file or service records!
I'm very interested in his escaping story!
Is there a way to find out if he's still alive?
I'll try to find any witnesses of the crash...A reconstruction of his escape line is may be possible!

Roger McKean was my father, and yes, he did make it out. He passed away in 1993. There is a group currently researching LV283, in the UK and Belgium.

After bailing he hid in haystacks for the first couple of days; someone found him, dressed him like the locals and got bikes for them to ride to Hannut. He stayed with an old couple for 2 weeks, then was taken to Courtrai-Sur-Lys by motorcycle with false ID as a flax merchant. He stayed with a flax merchant, and then moved to Halluin and stayed with the familyh of a customs officer, then eventually crossed into France, then stayed in a tavern where was given a French passport for 4 weeks, then moved into the home of a dentist and his wife in Lille until the Liberation.

You wrote this post a few years ago. I am RP McKean's daughter, and he did make it out in a few months. He passed away almost 20 years ago, but I can provide a bit of information on his escape route. You can reach me at greenplanet@sympatico.ca.
