For the Operation to Meresburg (Leuna Oil Plant) 4/5 April 1945 part of a debriefing note is wtitten as follows.
M/B heard to say at E-15 "Basement Flight Plan and don't drop any illuminating flares." I can understand the E-15 and flare part but can someone tell me what "Basement Flight Plan" means????? Thanks
Hello I spoke with my father, Elmer Trotter, who was a pathfinder pilot. He says to the best of his knowledge, the basement flight plan would mean as follows:
"When leaving England or wherever the departure point, the weather had been predicted to be cloud cover below the bomber stream over the target area. However, upon arrival, it was likely clear and therefore the Master Bomber would give instructions to fly in low level and visually mark and drop bombs.
Hi Leslie, Thanks for your reply and thanks also to your father. I continue to come across various abbreviations or notations that I have not seen before and am not familliar with and find the need to know. Many floks from this site have been very helpful in that regard. Thanks once again, Bill.
My Dad still has a very sharp mind, given his 85 years. We are currently writing his memoirs from the war years so he is more than happy to provide comment/answers where possible, to inquiries on the various boards I subscribe to given all the help they have provided to me.
