Does anyone know of a website that lists P.O.W.'s. I have visited the R.A.F. Commands one but am told (not by them) that it it is not up to date (it might be). I'm trying to track down some names of aircrew that F.T.R. and are not listed on the C.W.G.C. website. I've tried name variations and different spellings but am now stumped. Thanks, Bill.
I am a member of the RCAF ex-P.O.W. Association, although not a bonefide POW (I was an Evader and made a POW by the American Army on my liberation until I could prove I was Canadian). However, the Assn. is dissolving, but there are still several places where you can get information.
For instance, one is the book "They Shall Grow Not Old" which lists all the Airforce Deaths during WW11. However, it also lists all the Canadian P.O.W.'s of the R.C.A.F. Another source would be Wilkie Wanless of wilkiewanless@shaw.ca, but Wilkie is currently in the hospital and may not be back at his computer for a while. There are also several books out on POW's, and if you will pass some of the names past me, I'll try to look them up.
Also, don't forget that we Evaders were D.N.R.'s as well, and I have the list of most of them from Canada. They were members of R.A.F.E.S.
Sadly, the numbers of both associations are growing thin.
Bill-I also had a problem trying to trace some POW's.I have a copy of Footprints in the Sands of Time, which lists quite a few,if that is any help to you.If you let me have some names,i will see what i can do, with/without the book!
Hi John, Thanks for your reply, The following are the names I'm trying to track down they were ALL from 431 R.C.A.F. Squadron and from the complete listing. Although they were part of crews that F.T.R.I don't seem to able to find out what happened to them Lockhead R. L. J90280 A/G F.T.R. DUSSELDORF 04/23/44 McAdam J. 1029111 W/AG F.T.R. STUTTGART 04/14/43 Noseworthy L. 1391075 W/AG F.T.R. BERLIN 12/29/43
Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated this would let me complete things for this section of my book. Thanks, Bill.
HI Linda, And thanks to you also for your reply (see my answer to John) for your requested information. The thing I should have mentioned is that I'm not even sure if they WERE P.O.W.'s its just that I know they were part of different crews that F.T.R. and I can't find out anything about them on the C.W.G.C. site, that could be because of a wrong spelling of the name but I've tried different variations and have come up dry so the only thing I can think of failing the mispelling, is that they might have been taken P.O.W. I've drawn a blank in all my attempts so here we are. Thanks, Bill.
Hi Ken, Many thanks for your reply and the info. Much as I suspected all along that there had to be a mispelling of the names (a frequent occurence in the O.R.B.) ie I came across the name of an airman whose initials were H.A. it had to depend on who was taking the information at the time because his initials were written as A.J. ------ when you say it, it sounds the same. So anyway we're now down to one name and I'm sure sooner or later that too will be solved. Thanks again, Bill
So, now we're down to J. McAdam. His number indicates that he is RAF and perhaps sources in England might have more success. Glad you solved the others.
Bill-Yes Lockhead is part of the crew of"The first of many" under the airmens section on the site which I did a while back for Blair Corkill.Nice crew picture also. I am trying to attach his deather certificate to this!It gave me a few details on him.I will see if i can find McAdam, altho he will be on my list to find anyway.
Bill-Just to confirm it is James Green Adam RAF from Aberdeen. Have e mailed his neice, she has no photo and not really any other info apart from what is on the C.W.G. site
Hi Linda, Check your inbox for my reply to you. and to John and Ken thanks for your help. The O.R.B. gave this airmans name as McAdam and it should have been Adam *bit of a difference????. Linda tracked him down for me and I confirmed it by way of the service number. Thanks again to all. Bill. (Now the listing is complete)
