Ground Crew Canada
Permalink

I am trying to find out details of my dad Aubrey Hastings.  He embarked in March 31st 1942 and went to Canada and became what I think is ground crew as he spent the war years repairing the planes.  He was originally from Dartford Kent England.  I have no idea where abouts in Canada he served but I do know he spent a lot of vacation time in New york and Columbus Ohio.
While in New York he used to visit Jack Dempseys bar.
I know virtually nothing about his time in Canada so I wonder if there is anyone who knew him or knew of him.
Although his name was Aubrey he may have been called Bill at that time as that was what he was called by everyone else at home at least after the war.
He was born in 1922 and died in 2004.
The photo's I have posted are just 5 of the only 10 I have of him during those years.  As you can see one photo is of a football team.
Hope someone knew him.

What really great photo's!
I would presume that Ground Crew would have a service record held at  the Record office that you could send away for.
What  is on the rest of the photo's-are  they taken in Canada also?

Railroad,
Interesting photo's, I cannot see the ID letter's on a/c, but one would think if you could identify the aircraft then you could possibly place the vicinity of where your father worked.
Are there any photos of football team with jersey's?
Possibly the RAF sent him to Canada and there are records at the KEW, If you visit rafcommands site I recently seen a thread on there indicating a search of KEW records now available online, don't know if this would help you.
Good luck.
Alan

Thank you for your comments.  Yes, the other pics I have are all of dad in Canada. I only have 10 altogether. But I also have a lot of scenery ones too which dad took from the train on his journeys from Canada to the US on his vacations. They are spectactular as you can imagine.I do actually have a form to fill in and send off to find out dads service records but thought I'd post messages on here in the chance that someone may stilll be around who knew him.

Hello.  You must be Julia. I am your cousin, Ralph, son of Muriel, your dad's sister.

I have similar photos of your Dad from the war years. I do know he spent time in Maine.

Are you aware of other details of his stay in the U.S.?

I met him once or twice when he visited Granny when she was living with us in Hornchurch in the 1960's.

Sorry, but this is a bit of a stock answer, based on my experience.

I would highly recommend that you fill in the form and obtain a copy of his service record which will provide you with information on his training and his postings. Once you have applied (proving next of kinship so that you get the full set of information), you will be able to establish where he was posted and his trade(s) / rank(s) etc. Be aware that records are taking months (rather than weeks) to be sent out so you will have to be patient.

I hope this is helpful to you; good luck with your search

Regards

Pete

Hi Raplh,

WOW ! How wonderful to hear from you.  I always wondered if I have cousins in the US. I know barely nothing at all about dads family or his war years.

Please email me direct as there is so much to talk about.     camelot.55@btopenworld.com
