Can anyone help me with identifying the uniform and badges of the man in this photo.e.g.,Army,Navy,Airforce?
He is beleived to be Indonesian and served in WW2.He was a friend of a POW of 150 squadron who was liberated from Moosburg.
The man in the photo is called Abdul Abdullah Halim Effendi Pedanga Wong Sotaruna, known as Halim and stayed with my pow  and family whilst on leave.
I have trawled Indonesian sites but just can't find any clues.
He was killed during the first days of the Indonesian War of Independence and apparently came from quite a "well to do family"
He is not thought to have been a pow  but was fighting  for the Allies and all the family knows is that he became a family friend, while staying on leave.
There is possibly an airport in Indonesia named after him
Any help welcome!

Linda,

I had originally identified him as a Lietenant, however I now believe this to be incorrect. The badges on his lapels which are immediately below what I believe to be the State Crown of the Netherlands are Dutch air force (a seven-cylinder rotary engine superimposed on a single-blade propeller).

As a "colonial" citizen of the Dutch East Indies it is reasonable to assume that he was a member of a branch of the Royal Netherlands Air Force. As a colonial it is also possible that the badging would differ in some respects from that of the "home country".

He does not wear a "wing" to identify a particular Dutch aircrew specialty/trade. The engine/prop badge may represent a technical/engineering branch. Possible to have a higher resolution scan of the single device on his lower lapel?

Cheers, Ken

Thanks Ken,That is amazing.
It has given me something to work on now!
This is the best that i could get  on the badge.
It could be a lion?
It is quite hard to work out what it is but i am sure someone would recognise it.
Thanks you so much for getting me this far!

Yes Linda, that is the "Dutch Lion" that appears on the Netherlands Coat of Arms.

The scroll at the bottom of the badge he wears would be inscribed "Nederland".

Ken-Thank you so much!
Now all i have to do is to find a Dutch site that can maybe tell me more about him.
I know nothing about the RNAF!
Or their role in WW2
I really appreciate all your help,as this is all an area that i am unfamiliar with.
Many thanks!!

Linda,

I suggest you post this enquiry on the two Miltaria Forums I have linked to below. These are the two pre-eminent forums on the internet dealing with uniforms, insignia, etc. Several thousand active users "live" on both of these very active forums and I am sure you will obtain some results.

The Gentleman's Military Interest Club (GMIC):
http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?http://gmic.co.uk/

Wehrmacht Awards
http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/index.php

Do not be put off by the title of the latter website. It originated as a German memoribalia site but has expanded in recent years to include forums on the armed forces of virtually every country/region. Almost 6,000 active users.

Do not be too concerned in which sub-forum you post an enquiry on either of these forums. They are activley moderated and will be moved by the moderators if required.

Hello Linda,

You can perhaps send an e-mail with the picture to the Military Museum of the Netherlands Air Force. Here's the link:

http://www.militaireluchtvaartmuseum.nl/arachna.aspx?id=77&lng=1

Their e-mail:info@militaireluchtvaartmuseum.nl

I'm sure that they'll give you more info about the badges and perhaps about Halim

Greetings from Belgium

Alexander

Just to say that I received an e mail from a Henk Kauffman of the Netherlands Institute for Military History (Thanks Alexander!)regarding the photo.
The man in the photo is Abdulhalim Raden Perdanakoesama Wongso Taroena.
One of Jakarta's airports "Halim Perdanakusuma Airport is named after him.
He joined the Royal Dutch Naval Air services in 1941.
he was detached to the Royal Air Force from August 1942 until January1944.
In March 1946 he was one of the first pilots in the newly formed Indonesian Airforce "Auris".
He was killed on December 14th 1947 in his aircraft, possibly  during the War of Independence in Indonesia.
I can only assume that he met my pow when he was in the RAF,maybe training as he stayed with the family in England when on leave.
If anyone comes across anything else,I would be interested.
A big thank you to everyone!
