Could someone please tell me what the letters B.D.U. stand for. This appears several times in the 431 Sqdn. O.R.B. but offers no explanation as to what it means. Thanks for your help. Bill
My only thought is 'Bombing Development Unit' which was based variously at Gransden Lodge, Feltwell and Newmarket. (Note that it is 'Bombing' and not 'Bomber'.)
Hi Alan, Thanks for your reply. It refers to aircrew (singular) being posted out, perhaps if your theory is correct maybe some aircrew required some additional training. Although I've come across it before, it never dawned on me till now to try and find out what it means. Thanks again. Bill
Sorry about the silence. I've been enjoying a long weekend away in Wet Wales!
Further to my note about the Bombing Development Unit, it seems to have had a wide-ranging brief. The Operations Record Book mentions tests on such as target marking pyrotechnics, flight refuelling, autopilot, SABS and many different radar aids including Gee, H2S and Village Inn (AGLT). It also seems to have had a training element as some Lancasters were on charge for aircrew training purposes.
Hi Alan & John, Thanks to you both for your efforts to set me straight. With so many abbreviations it's hard to keep track of the none too common ones. I'll make sure I mark this one down for future reference. Too bad the weather in Wales didn't co-operate for you Alan, still it's nice to get a break. Thanks again to you both. Regards, Bill.
