205 Group Stationed in Italy
Permalink

I am looking for some statistics for the period early February 1944 to September 1944 with respect to the subject group which would have been involved in the destruction of the oil fields, refineries, key bridges and the mining of the Danube River. These operations would have taken place in Romania, and around Ploesti.

I am interested in the number of allied aircraft lost, the number of airmen killed, the number wounded, taken POW and evaders who made contact and were given haven by Mihailovich's guerilla's and ultimately escaping.

I believe the Squadrons involved would be as follows: 37,70,40,104,31,178,614,142 and 150.

Any information, or direction to other sources of this information, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Leslie

Hi Leslie

Nice to see you still looking for information even after finishing your book.
You can get  a list of 205's operations from Richard Davis's book "Bombing the European Axis Powers". It is available free online here: http://aupress.maxwell.af.mil/Indexes/author_ndx_bks.htm
Click on CD ROM. There is a folder called worksheets that have spreadsheets for all bombing operations in the European theatre that details date, type of target, number of aircraft including numbers for failing to return, tons and types of bombs dropped. There are about 400 ops by 205 Group listed in the timeframe you are looking for and oil targets are differentiated between refineries & storage.
Regards
Dave

Thanks Dave

I am assisting one of Dad's friends with some research. He was with 40 Squadron stationed at Foggia.

Last week I received the first draft of the book from the publisher, made some corrections and now expect that version this week. We are still aiming for end of August for the release.

Hope things are well with you.

Leslie
