My sister and a cousin & myself, are trying to complete our family tree, and we notice that we used to have a cousin who was called Raymond Smith (apparently his nickname was PICKLE, given to him by his parents). Raymond Smith was killed on a raid to (no idea) & all the info we have on him is that he was killed on a raid in 1942 ish, and that he is buried in East Germany. His parents names were Norman Leslie Smith & Emma Kate Smith (nee Reeves). His Father was a publican and ran the Kingsley Arms in Melville Road. Maidstone Kent, (we dont know if this was before or during the war). Raymond was a crew member of a Lancaster Bomber. I wasn't born until 1944 so I know nothing more about him. We would love to find out all about him and his exploits, but this is that part of our family we know nothing about. One of Raymonds relations was my Grand Father one Algernon Smith. of Wrexham, he had a photographic business in Wrexham before, during and after the war. We would be very grateful if anyone has any news about raymond Smith. Thank you for reading this letter.

Dear Linda. Thank you so much for the info, I would love to know how you find all the facts out for everybody on this website. Once again many thanks for your help, I will pass this onto my cousin so that she can update the family tree. I realise that the name Smith is/was a common name, sowas he the only raymond Smith?.
On the Commonwealth War Graves Debt of Honour, which is on-line He is listed as Raymond Algernon Reeves Smith Parents Norman Leslie and Emma of Maidstone and wife Elsie Agnes also of Maidstone,Kent
The crew were all RAFVR
(Royal Airforce Volunteer reserve)
I shall have a looksee into the rest of the crew for you.
Dear Linda Wow you are a star, even more information that's absolutly brilliant, yes Algernon seems to be the family name, although I was blessed with a family name from my Mothers side & I have always disliked it, Bromly, fancy being named after a town in Kent. Best wishes from Richard Smith

A pleasure,I shall see if I can find out more.,and maybe the relations of other crew members
I expect Raymond is also remembered on a local War memorial.
And maybe a Roll of Honour for his old school/college. I try all these avenues and Geneology sites and usually come up with something!
You can look up the rest of the crew and ages and where they came from by googling Commonwealth War Graves,Debt of Honour. If you put their names and the year of death,Airforce etcetera,it will show their details. You can also go onto the RAF Commands Forum and post a request about the crew and their demise,as they were shot down by a night-fighter,someone should have the details-they are all experts!!
As he was married, maybe his widow or that line would have photo's,if you know her maiden name. It is amazing what you can find out.

There is also a 166 squadron site
You mention the crew here, in what order would they have been writen down, would the pilot have been first, if so, what did the other lads do?. Presumably Sgnt HK Harrison survived the crash or bailed out, where was he imprisoned & is he still alive? Thank you for any info. Richard Smith

Hi Richard, These may be of help. http://www.bomber-command.de/crsite2.html http://www.bomber-command.de/ed841inf.html http://www.lostbombers.co.uk/bomber.php?id=11073 There may be a little bit of information available for you. Hi, I am now in touch with George Clark's family (crews navigator) who have sent a couple of photo's. Would you like to e mail me and I can put you in touch, maybe they have more info for you Linda
Dear Linda. Many thanks for the info, we would love to get in contact with george Clarks family, if they dont mind taht it, I wouldn't want to step on any toes, so if they are happy then that would be fantastic. Thank you very much, my email address is vj3346@talktalk.net, should you require it. Best wishes from Richard Smith
Dear Linda. many thanks for your info, I may come back to you if i may regarding what exactly to say to them, as this will be the first time that I have done anything like this & as I said before I dont wnat to put my foot in it. Regards from Richard Smith
I was interested to read your post from a couple of years ago and the information you received. I am Raymond 'Pickle' Smith's great nephew (his father and mother were my great grandparents, although unfortunately I never knew them. I guess we must be relatives! Fascinating but sad to leanr what happened to him.
Dear Peter. Thank you for your email, so where are you then.? Raymond died the year I was born, its just a shame that he didn't live to an old age, I recon he would have had some tales to tell.
Bomber Command is one of my reading subjects, although the last book I started I could not finnish Tail End Charles.
Can you give me any more family history, so that i can pass it onto my cousin, who was doing the family tree, I was doing the military side of the history, although Raymond's was the only family I was doing, I was concentrating on two masters from school, and also my Mother in Laws cousin who was a twice decorated Mosquito pilot.
It appears all the interesting members of the family (mine & my wifes) past away before I came on the scene.
Thank you for replying to me. Your cousin's family tree would make interesting reading as would the military history.
Until last year I was still living in Maidstone (I'm in Dublin now.) My mother and other Smith related family are still there and scattered about in various other parts of the globe. My mother's maiden name was Pamela Newman. Her mother was Norman Leslie Smith's daughter, Dorothy and I also remember her brother, Harry Smith. I knew about Great Uncle Pickle from an early age as my mother has often spoken fondly of him. She told me he was a Pathfinder. Dorothy Smith had eight children in all, starting with Joan, who died as a toddler following an operation; Beryl, who lives in Canada; Norman (Jack) who died a few years ago; Molly, who died in 1980; Pamela (my mother); Barbara, who lives in Maidstone; Dennis (Australia) and Sheila, who is also in Maidstone. They of course have a plethora of children and grandchildren!
I will be glad to supply you with any more information and would be interested to know more of the family tree (for instance, I had no idea there was a Wrexham connection) and also more of Pickle's role in the RAF and his resting place. I did not know he was buried in Berlin.
I came across an interesting article the other day in the London Gazette of 4th November 1919 stating that a Henry Norman Smith had changed his name by deed poll from Reeves to Smith. I assumed that it was my great grandfather Norman Leslie as he was described as a builder living at 36 Melville Road Maidstone, which was Norman Leslie's trade and address but the first names are different, with the exception of Norman. Can you shed any light on that? I know of course that my great grandmother was a Reeves and it's interesting to note that Raymond's name was Raymond Algernon Reeves Smith.
Thanks for the info, please leave me your email address in my whiteboard on my profile page, it will be easier to correspond then and any info you can give me I can then send onto my cousin, as I am sure she will be very interested & will be able to tell you a lot more than I can.
