Nuremberg Raid 30/31 March 1944
Permalink

I am a composer commissioned to write a Cantata for performance at the Arundel Music Festival this August (2010) and am in need of some help.

The Cantata is dedicated to Bomber Command aircrew kia in WW2 and with specific reference to the crew of Lancaster KM-C, 44 Squadron, Dunholme Lodge - brought down by flak over Unteressfeld on the night of 30/31 March 1944.

My cousin P.O. Trevor George Charlesworth was the pilot.

I have the full names of four of the other crew members and would appreciate help in confirming the christian names of the remaining two:

Sgt S Percival and Sgt GW Scott

Thanks,

Dee Palmer

Dear AW,

I really am most grateful for your prompt response.

As soon as I have the publicity material and other info re the first performance of  the
Cantata KM-C, I will post it on the site.

Once again, thank you very much.

Hi Dee,

I dont know how much research you have done regarding your cousin. The online Combat Reports (National Archives) has an entry by P/O Charlesworth dated 19th February 1944.  However there is a charge for obtaining this.

The reports are normally from Pilots or Air Gunners.

Regards,
Mike

Hi Dee,

In the book "The Nuremburg Raid" by Martin Middlebrook, he has Lancaster ND795 of 44 squadron as being the 67th aircraft shot down on this operation.
He notes it was probably shot down by a night fighter piloted by Leutnant Seuss of
4./NJG 5.

Hope this is of some help,
Wayne.

Worth noting that more airmen were lost on this raid than were lost during the whole of the Battle of Britain.

Dear W 100

Thankyou - I hadn't made that comparison. Nevertheless, it is still a harrowing fact.

Dee, I am writing a Novel on 44Sqn at the moment and I came across your posting. Could you give me more information on PO Trevor George Charlesworth. Where was he from, when was he born, what was his profession? Was he married? I of course would not use his name in the book. I would appreciate your help.

Regards

Daryl

Would be glad to get in contact with relatives of crew members of Lancaster ND795 lost over Germany. I'm living in Lower Franconia as part of Northern Bavaria and have a few local information.

Yes sir, I know. But his grandfather is very tight-lipped about it. If it was not for this fact, my friend would have found information on his own. I was just hoping that there may be some sort of search engine set-up somewhere where a persons name could just be typed in, and walla. Thanks anyhow mate.

Hi at all,

I know, that this post ist old, but I´ve got some questions:

I think it was 2015, I was in contact with the family of pilot officer Mr. Charlesworth. I sent them some pictures from the impact area, the memorial stone, the cementery and a hole powerpoint presentation. Since then i didn´t hear anything. I don´t care about it, but now, I´ve got information about another Lancaster shot down in the same night some miles away and my friend is in contact with the son. This son visited the area with his family some weeks ago and he would like to contact the family of Mr. Charlesworth. But I´ve lost the address. Can anyone help me, maybe this cousin is still here in this forum an read this post. Then contact me. Thanks....

I am interested in all of the discussions, although I may not be able to post my opinions because my workplace and I have to wait until the end of the day to make my comment or provide an answer.
