Hello all

One of my research subjects is Pilot Officer Harry Humphrey Tuck who was killed on the night of 28/29 July 1944.

At the time of his death he was a pilot with 625 sqn who he joined in April 44 but he had previously served on 12 Sqn from November 43 to March 44.

I have a copy of a photograph of Harry Tuck with his 12 Sqn crew who had been posted in from 1656 Conversion Unit:

Sgt. JC Pollard                                                         14255043      Navigator

Sgt. JE Cheadle                                                       1128020        Wireless Operator

Sgt. Kenneth Launcelot Summerscale               1862419        Flight Engineer

W/O Robert Timperley                                             751155           Air Bomber

Sgt. Jack Ernest McInnes   RCAF                        R179691        Air Gunner

Sgt. Ronald G Gerelli                                              1387977        Air Gunner

In May of 2010 I had the great priviledge of meeting Ron Gerelli and his wife. Sadly Ron passed away late last year at the age of 89.

Summerscale, Timperley and McInnes were killed when ND562 (captained by F/L Cook) was shot down on the night of 30/31 March 44. At that time Harry Tuck had been posted to 11 Base RAF Lindholme.

Robert Timperley was aged 26 and the son of George and Agnes Rose Timperley and the husband of Edith Edna Haynes Timperley, of Whalley, Blackburn, Lancashire.

Jack McInnes was the Son of Arthur and Hettie E. McInnes, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Harry Tuck was aged 21 and was the son of Arthur Edward and Patience Tuck, of Withington, Manchester.

He was posthumously awarded the DFC.

I would be pleased to hear from anyone with any information about Harry Tuck or any of his 12 Sqn crew and I'm happy to pass on my findings about them.

Regards
Mike

Mike,
I've got the 625sqdn ORB if you want anything on the previous ops flown by Tuck whilst with the squadron.
Alan.

Thanks Alan

I think I have all the images from the 625 Sqn ORB that relate to Harry Tuck's period there. I have also photographed Kelstern's ORB from April to July 44.

Similarly I have the relevant pages from the 12 Sqn and Wickenby ORBs.

Harry Tuck joined his second crew at 1656 CU (first flight in a Halifax on the 22nd of March 44) then there was a short period at No.1 LFS and they arrived at 625 Sqn on the 22nd of April.

Hello. I am the grand-daughter of Robert Timperley to whom you refer in this thread and I would be very interested to see a copy of the photograph you mention, if that is at all possible?

Best wishes

Hello again

I thought I would update the information on Jack McInnes as I now have copies of the documents in his service file.

(Many thanks to Alieneyes for his assistance here)

Jack Ernest McInnes was born in June 1920 in Uxbridge, England.

His mother was also from England.

He enlisted in July 1942 and was commissioned on the 29th of March 1944

A great surprise was to learn that his logbook is amongst the documents in the Ottawa archives.

One thing that particularly interests me in the logbook is a period, between 28 OTU and 1657 CU, at 1481 (B) Gunnery Flight - Binbrook.

There were 7 flights in Wellingtons of 1 to 2 hours duration each.

The flights are annotated C.G.A. No.s 1 to 7.      Perhaps C.G. refers to Cine Gun or maybe Combat Gunnery.

On the 2nd Nov 43, at 1656 CU, one of the flights is marked "weather test" and the pilot is Wing Commander Holford DSO, DFC.

This officer was only 22 when he was killed. He had taken command of 100 Sqn on the 20th of November and was pilot of Lancaster JB560 which crashed near to Kelstern after returning from Berlin in December 1943.

Another flight noted in McInnes' logbook at 1656 CU is with a Flying Officer Caldow DFM, likely to have been William Fleming Caldow DFM, AFC, DSO.

Regards

Mike

Hello all

I am the grand-daughter of Ronald Gerelli mentioned in this thread who was part of the Bomber crew you mention.

I would love to see a copy of this photograph please and would be most grateful for any further information you can provide me with.

Also Michelle, my husbands, mother's maiden name, was Timperley and she was from Salford, Manchester. Any chance this could be a connection to your grand-father Robert?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Emily

Hello Emily, good to hear from you.

I'll be pleased to help in any way I can.

The thread below has a little more information that you may not have seen;

http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?8252-12-Sqn-crew-Tuck-Pollard-Cheadle-Timperley-Summerscale-McInnes-Gerelli

As you'll see, I had the privilege of meeting your grand father in May 2010.

Sadly, James Cheadle, who flew with him in 43/44 has now passed away and I have not been able to find any information about John Pollard.

I would be grateful if you could email me at; mwam.156(AT)btinternet.com or leave me some way of contacting you on my bombercrew profile page.

Kind regards

Mike

Dear Mike

I've sent you some information about John Pollard, my late father, on the rafcommands forum. I'll copy it here if you haven't seen it.

I would dearly love a copy of any photos which include my father. I'm currently researching his service record, but have no photos of his time at Wickenby. I do have copy of his logbook, though, which shows Harry Tuck as the pilot of several of the missions which my father few in early 1944. I'd be very happy to send you a copy, if it would be of of interest.

Sincerely

Chris Pollard

Hi Chris and thanks for posting your message on this site

- it seems to be one of the best for returning results for those embarking on their research.

I'm pleased that the photo that I saw in the RAF museum is of such value to you.

a copy of the same photo is held by the family of Ron Gerelli - an original copy, though his wasn't signed by the crew.

Comparing your father's logbook with those of Jack McInnes and James Cheadle is most interesting.

I assumed that all navigators were posted overseas as part of their training (Canada, U.S., S.A. etc)

and expected to see something similar for your father.

However, I see that he was at No.4 Advanced Observer School(?), West Freugh from February to May 1943.

I have the postings dates for Harry Tuck and Jack McInnes also.

Harry graduated as a pilot at Moody Field, Georgia, U.S.A., (aged 19y 8m), and Jack McInnes started his gunnery

training at No.3 B. & G.S., Macdonald, Manitoba.

On another crew that I research, I see the navigator attended No.1 Elementary Air Navigation School (Bridgenorth) from Dec 42 to Feb 43.

Then between there and arriving at 28 O.T.U (25th May) he was at No.4 Air Observer School, which I believe was near London, Ontario.

So two navigators who had very different paths at almost exactly the same period of the war.

During his later time on 625 Sqn, Harry Tuck had a navigator who had attended No.1 Elementary Air Observer School (Jan 1942),

then several Air Schools in South Africa (No.s 43, 47, 48) from Aug 1942 to Mar 1943.

After return to the UK he was at No.9 (Observers) Advanced Flying Unit, Penrhos for about a month before posting to 83 O.T.U.

Best regards

Mike
