Does anyone have any info. on these Sqd's my grandfather served with all of them as an N.C.O and Officer anything would be appericated.
I know he was shot down over Burma, the only story he told me as he knew I had a strong connection to the military and wanted to enlist as soon as I was of age,he told me too try to dissuade me from joining.
The story is that while flying a mission over Burma with 31sqd.they were shot down my grandfather kept the aircraft level so his two crewmates could bail out suffering
3rd degree burns to his back before he was able too bail out,as an ex-airbourn trooper i cant even amagine the pain he would have been in when his chute deployed.
Using his escape kit he started to back track their coarse to try to link up with his crew,as night fell he heard screams coming from a clearing the japanese had captured his friends and were tourturing them too death .
My grandfather couldn't do anything for them and spent the next 3 days evading japanese patrols untill he was picked up by local resistance and a sec.of Gurkas lead by an english officer,he was handed a lee enfield and told that until they could arrange his pick up he was now a rifle man, they treated his wounds and he spent the next 2mons fighting in the jungle .
the Gurkas were so impressed with him that the senior N.C.O presented him with his own Kucuri ,that i have now
