Im trying to find info on one airmen who evaded capture after being shot down. He was part of the crew of LW383. I seem to have hit a brick wall about imformation so any help in finding more info or where to go next would be very helpful
Sory i forgat this , the aircraft came down near the town off Ath wich is near the Belgian-French border. There is no sign of the names of Bodey and Beamish on the list of people helped by the Belgian escape line Comete , so therefore i think both evaded trough a French escape line.
LW383 was initially issued to No.420 Sqdn. Airborne 2149 12Aug44. Shot down by a night-fighter, crashing at Chapelle-a-Ois (Hainaut), 8 km WSW of Ath. Those killed are buried in Chievres Communal Cemetery. At 35, P/O Humble was well above the average age for operational aircrew. Both Air Gunners were aged nineteen. F/O O.S.MacPhillamy RAAF KIA Sgt F.B.Newman PoW P/O J.W.Humble KIA Sgt N.R.Beamish Evd F/S L.R.Bodey RAAF Evd Sgt G.E.Ward KIA Sgt L.Stafford KIA Sgt F.B.Newman was interned in Camp L3, PoW No.8996. Dear Mark,
My cousin was Flight Engineer F.B. Newman who was shot down with your Uncle Len Stafford, 12/13 August 1944.
Frank was badly wounded trying to bail out, he was wounded in the arm and had difficulty getting his chute on. He came down through a tree and landed in a compost heap in the farm yard. The resistance would not take him because of his wounds and he was picked up by the Germans and ended up in Stalag lift III for the rest of the war. He died in April 2010 and he left me his brevets, medals and pow tag. I still see his sister, Freda nearly every week but he told me more about his adventures.
If you want any bits of info then you can contact me via e-mail: jondiwilk@googlemail.com or 01226 216099.
Many thanks
