Hello Pat, thank you for your post. This is a bit of a mystery I am afraid because there are no Coyles or Corytons who served on Lancasrters with 166 Squadron. I have also looked at the posting sheets for March, April, May 1945 but can see no immediate match. If you care to email me a scan of the writing I might be able to decipher it for you. The number quoted by you does seem to be a service number but again no match at the moment. mjc41uk@yahoo.co.uk
Best Wishes, B

I'm arranging a family gathering at the grave in Rheinberg of my uncle Sgt. Frank Hume on the seventieth anniversary of his death on 22nd March, and would appreciate any information you have about his service. All I have is that he was mid top gunner in a Lancaster of 166 Sqdn.
SGT FRANK FRANK HUME 1881638 RAF KILLED IN ACTION 23/03/45
Hello Roy,
Sgt Frank Hume 1881638 RAF, son of Barney and Emma Hume of Foulness, Essex, was the Mid Upper gunner in the crew of F/Sgt Moore RCAF and the crew were shot down on the 23/03/45 during a raid on Hildesheim. The crew arrived on 166 Squadron on the 22.01.45 and flew their first operation on 20.02.45. They completed 8 operations before the final one to Hildesheim, a small town 15 miles S.E of Hanover. Take off was at 11.10 hours .Opposition in the target area was light but Flak encountered near Cologne. I would guess they were probably brought down by anti aircraft fire from the ground.
6 of the crew are buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery, 1 in Wotton War Cemetery.
Please Email me direct on mjc41uk@yahoo.co.uk and I have further information (use your own email provider not the wizard as for some reason it sometimes rejects my email address).
Best Wishes and hope to hear from you.

RE: 166 Squadron RAF Kirmington help available to researchers
I am writing on behalf of my father Flt Lt (Rtd) John Double DFC who served at RAF Kirmington during the 2nd World War as a Lancaster Pilot. He is currently 92 yrs old, D of B 22/11/1921, and living in Bradwell outside Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. I was speaking to him just this weekend when I took up his Bomber Command Clasp and put it on his medals. He mentioned he had some items from the war years he wished to donate to a Bomber Command Museum, mainly documentary items I believe. I obviously looked you up on the internet and was wondering if you could assist both in this matter or perhaps anyone who has memories of Dad or served with him.
My contact details are Kevin Double 16 Orchard Road, Hook, Chessington, Surrey. KT9 1AN tel 02083975084 or Mobile 07831816669.
Thank you for your post. F/O Double and crew served on 166 Squadron in 1944. I will email you directly. May thanks for your post. B

Kirmington is now Humberside Airport. There is a memorial in the village and memorabilia on the walls of the village pub 'The Marrow Bone and Cleaver' aka 'The Chopper'.
Has any one documented the photos that are at the Marrow Bone and Cleaver. I have been in contact with them in the last few months and they have responded saying they would check, but nothing after that. Are those photos catalogued any where else?
Hello, I have not visited the Marrow Bone and Cleaver since the 1990s so I am not in a good position to comment I'm afraid! I am not aware of anyone actually cataloging the photos though. Do you have a relative that flew with 166? Best Wishes, B
Yes my father George White flew as a mid upper gunner in Martins crew. I'm trying to find more photos of him and the crew. The original Lancaster AS-F was shot down Nov 2, 1944. It would be nice to get a picture of that plane or the replacement AS-F.
Mark People was very helpful in getting a lot of info for me and he supplied the first crew picture that I have of my dad.
Hello, some confusion here we have already been in touch and I will be sending you some more photocopied crew pictures. (all I have I'm afraid). Best Wishes. B

Hi, Sgt Wilkie was the WOP in the crew of F/Lt Mansfield. The crew arrived on 166 Squadron on the 27/02/1945 and flew at least 11 operations before the end of the war. I will send you an email. B
I came across your post to this site while searching for information on my Dad's Lancaster crew. As I read your comments I realized that our fathers flew together in RAF squadron 166. My father's flying log book records the same ops trip to Essen on Oct 23rd, 1944 and same pilot, F/O Saunders. My father has told me the same story about a bomb passing through their aircraft's wing. I recognized your Dad's name as the mid upper gunner while Dad was the rear gunner. Sorry to read that your Dad has passed away. My father is still living but in poor health and suffering dementia at age 91.
Your might be interested to learn that each 4th april since 2012, your great uncle thomas LUSCOMBE and his crew are being commemorated in the town of Moëlan-sur-Mer, Brittany, France, close to the sea-site where their plane crashed (in the night of 3rd april 1943). The pilot's grave - Sgt. Arthur-Henry RADBOURNE - is in our communal cemetery.
The memory of this crew is being kept alive by several local associations : Military medal society, Mémoires et Photos. Here is the youtube link to the first Commemoration given in their honor (6th september 2012) after the story emerged from 69 years of forgetfulness : www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbFMRa5_YTA
If you want more information or photos about this still unwinding story, please, contact me at : djuray7@gmail.com
I am in touch with Mrs. J. E., from Quintrell downs, who must be one of your relatives. She sent me some beautiful and touching photos of your great uncle, one of them with a baby boy in his arms who must be someone close to you ?
Best regards, Blackforest
P.S. : on the first page of this forum, quite at the bottom, there is a large photo of the pilot's grave with a plaque mentioning all the other crews. Have you seen it ?

Took off 2nd June 1944 at 22.55, crashed somewhere over Calais.
There is an account of the event in the book Bombing Hitler: One man's war with Bomber Command By T.I. Steel. It mentions that ND651 was hit by flak somewhere over the coastline on approach to Calais. See pages 125-127.
Pilot Officer Geoffrey, David JONES (54294) RAF VR
Hello David, thank you for your post. I have sent you an email. P/O Jones and crew were posted to 166 in early Feb 44 and completed 22 ops before their last on to attack a railway gun position at Calais. A big shock to the Squadron as they were well on their way to completing their tour. B
My Father, Walter George Williams, was a London Metropolitan Police Officer from 1937 - 1967. He was with RAF Kirmington, Bomber Command, Lancaster, from 1942 - 1945. He completed 31 Operations in January, 1945. The Memorial that is to be erected in the near future in Lincoln is that for Fallen Police Officers or for all Police Officer that served in the RAF, WW2. He was attached to Traffic, "Z" Division, Thornton Heath, London.
His Flight Crew at RAF Kirmington were:-
Flg. Off. George Knott,
Sgt. Williams (Flt. Engineer), my Father
Flt. Sgt. Bailey, (Bombamier)
Flt. Sgt. Archer, (Navigator)
Plt. Off. Leigh (Wireless Op.)
Sgt. Greig (Mid Upper Gunner)
Sgt. Anderson, (Rear Gunner)
After completing 30 years of service, he retired at the age of 51 and passed away in Chichester, Sussex in 1997 at the age of 81.
SGT WALTER WILLIAMS ENGINEER KNOTT CREW RAF KIRMINGTON
Hi Susan, thanks for your post. I have been in touch with your son. The crew arrived at Kirmington on 14.10.44 and finished their Tour on 16 January 1945.
REMEMBER ALL POSTERS PLEASE RETURN TO SEE THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION AND PLEASE PLEASE LEAVE SOMEWAY TO COMMUNICATE WITH YOU IF YOU WANT FURTHER INFORMATION FROM MY ARCHIVES
My stepfather Sgt Nigel Harris (deceased) was with 166 Squadron in 1944. He was a Flight Engineer completing one Tour and recalled having to stand throughout the missions. I see however that he would have had a folding seat next to the pilot.
I have his logbook in my possession which records all the detail relating to each flight with the night flights entered in red. Fascinating reading.
If there is anything more you can tell us about my stepfather's role, or anything else that could be of interest, I'd be very keen to hear from you.
Hello Brian, your stepfather was the F. E in the crew of Flying Officer Walter Charles Hutchinson. He joined 166 Squadron on 20.05.44 and with the crew went on to complete a Tour of operations. Some of the crew, including Sgt Harris had been together on 12 Squadron with another pilot before their posting to 166.
If you email me on mjc41uk @ yahoo.co.uk I will see what further information I have (no spaces in email address when you type it).

my father flew with 166 squadron during the last couple of years of WW2, based at Kirmington - then post war he went to India. His name was Bernard Robinson - DOB 23/9/24. Sadly no longer with us.
We do have his sortie logs and other documentation - not sure what to do with them?
When you say about "not sure what to do with them" if you are talking about a Logbook amongst other things, then make sure you make the right decision. Logbooks, especially those that record operational trips in them are a very sought after items by collectors and RAF Historians, and can fetch a lot of money, as can be seen on sites such as ebay. If there are photographs etc among the documentation, they will be of interest to people such as myself and Barnsley, and can be posted here, or could be posted on the Facebook page "Bomber Command Crews and Aircraft Pictures" but that is your decision in the end.
SGT BERNARD ROBINSON WIRELESS OPERATOR 1699136 RAF STUART CREW 1944-1945
Hi Nick, Alan is quite right about log books and photographs being of interest to collectors and fetching a good price. I think I might have been in touch with your Dad (living a Yorkshire seaside town?) some years ago. That might be where some of the information your refer to came from. I would be very interested to speak to you before you decide what to do with the items. Could you email me direct on mjc41ukATyahoo.co.uk
SGT Dennis Lines Wireless Operator Oakie Walker crew 1944
Hi There, Dennis Lines was the WOp in the Walker crew. Arrived Kirmington 10/08/44 and completed a full Tour on 29/12/44. Your G Grand Dad did his first operation with another crew as Spare Bod, Le Culot Airfield 15/08/44.
Hi, Sidney Macpherson was my grandfather. Sadly he died a few years ago but my grandmother is still living and has wonderful stories, memories and photographs of the time. He often spoke very fondly of Jonnie Green and I believe (although I would need to check) that he attended my grandparents wedding.
Please email me on kp.hague@btopenworld.com if you would like to chat/ get in touch.
Hi Kathy, I have sent you a private email about your Grandfather. I have quite a bit of information about the crew which I will send you. Your Grandfather was in the crew of F/Lt Green and they arrived on 166 Squadron on 01/02/45. They completed about 21 operations with 166. I will send you details.
Dear Les, I have sent you a pm to your email address about Sgt Gammage.
PLEASE NOTE ANYONE WHO POSTS A REQUEST FOR INFORMATION ON THIS THREAD PLEASE PLEASE DO RETURN AND READ MY (AND SOMETIMES OTHER PEOPLES) RESPONSE. IT WILL ALWAYS BE THERE, ALTHOUGH SOMETIMES NOT IMMEDIATELY BELOW YOUR ORIGINAL POST AND YOU WILL HAVE TO SCROLL DOWN TO FIND IT. ALSO IF YOU COULD LEAVE SOME METHOD OF CONTACTING YOU THAT WOULD BE GREAT. SOMETIMES, WHILST I AM ALWAYS INTERESTED TO LEARN YOU ARE THE RELATION OF A 166 AIRMAN OR HAVE A PARTICULAR CONNECTION TO 166 SQUADRON, IT IS SO VERY DISAPPOINTING WHEN PEOPLE POST AND NEVER RETURN OR GET IN CONTACT AGAIN.
I have just discovered this page whilst trying to establish if the "Rememberance/Memorial" Day still takes place in Kirmington as I was told about many years ago. My understanding was that the village church had some kind of a service and then possibly there was a fly past of some description. Is there any truth in this? I live in London but would certainly make an effort to visit a place that was a significant part of my fathers past. He was a navigator with 166. I have his log book, all of his charts and a few photographs - I think he flew R with Captain Briggs. Would need to dig them out. I can be reached directly through ' david@kilvinton23.fsnet.co.uk '
I have just received my father's service record, Leonard Price ALLEN. He was posted to 166 Squadron on 20/08/45. He was a navigator with the rank of Pilot Officer in the RAFVR.
I would be grateful for any information you might have.
Thank you for your post on my 166 thread on the Bomber Crew Forum. There were two Briggs flying with 166 Squadron in 1945 but as you did not give your fathers name I do not know which one he was crewed with so cannot give you further information at the moment. J. L. Briggs had a Navigator called Fortune and J. C. Briggs had a Navigator called Jones.
The J. C. crew arrived on 166 Squadron 05.04.45 and flew 4 ops before the end of the war. J. L. and crew arrived on the 05.03.45. and flew 11 ops before the end of the war.
Thank you for your post. I am afraid that the records for 166 Squadron become progressively less detailed after the end of the War in 1945. As a result I have not been able to find your father's name in the Squadron's operations book. After the end of the war the Squadron flew several trips to Italy to collect demobbed serviceman (operation 'Dodge') and you father may have been involved in these. I am really sorry not be able to give you more information. B
