Have come across a uncle of mine, who served and was given the DFC, for saving the Lancaster he was flying in during the 2nd WWar.

His rank and name are F/Sgt Harold Canfield, I even have a photo of him.

Told he was one of the few that managed to crawl out on the wing of the Lanc, carrying a fire extinguisher with him, and put out an engine fire.

Can anyone tell me why I have not been able to find anything about this hero?

 Hi Tim,

As a F/Sgt he would not have been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, but the Distinguished Flying Medal....which he was if this is the right man:

1801491 Sgt Harold Ernest Canfield RAFVR 138 Squadron.

In the London Gazette Friday 18 August 1944. No citation given.

Not a Lancaster though as they were using both the Halifax and Stirling in 1944. The Lancaster was only used from March 1945 on.

asks if it was a Wellington.

At this time, having looked at the ORB for 138sqdn, i have found that he was posted out to 1651 CU on 15th July 44. Can't  find previous ops, as only the pilots are recorded against the aircraft.
