Hi,

          You need to find someone who has a copy of "Tavenders" book of DFM recipients. I know there's a couple of people on the RAF Commands website message board ( www.rafcommands.com )if you want to try there. I've looked in the 195sqdn ORB, but nothing found about his award, but this is probably down to the fact that he was not with 195sqdn for when he was initially awarded the medal, having only joined the squadron in November. The ORB does record 32 operational flights for him and the Boyd crew, starting with Heinsburg on the 16th November 44, and ending with Leuna on 4th April 45.

Alan.

Hi there,

From Ian Tavender's 'The Distinguished Flying Medal Register For The Second World War' Volume 1,pages 368-9;

CLIFF,Leonard.16822447 Flight Sergeant,No.195 Sqn.

L.G.16/11/45.Sorties 31,Flying hours 161.40 Navigator.Air2/9137.

Flight Sergeant Cliff has successfully completed a large number of operational bombing sorties as Navigator.Throughout his operational tour,he has consistently shown an outstanding ability as a Navigator and was a member of an exceptionally good crew.His personal example andnavigational experience has been of great value to the squadron with which he served.In night operations,he has done particularly well and has carried out a number of sorties,some of which have been deep penetrations into Germany.This N.C.O.'s courage and devotion to duty in action have been of a very high order.

                                                                                 30th April 1945.

Remarks by Station Comander.

Flight Sergeant Cliffhas proved himself to be an able Navigator.I support the Squadron Commander's recommendation thatan award of the Distinguished Flying Medal should be made to this N.C.O.
