Hi,

can anyone help with any information regarding an Edward Seekins (or Seekings).                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             A former Halifax pilot with 298 Squadron, survived the war but killed in a Mosquito flying accident in 1946.  I have no information such as service number or rank.

Mike.

Have tried to help with this one, but had no luck. There does not appear to be an Edward Seekins on BDM (http://freebmd.org.uk/) but there is an Edward Seekings. Have you tried downloading the relevant section of AIR78 (which is free to download or view online from the National Archives). This should give you his service number and confirm his name.

Regards

Pete

The CWGC is searchable up to 1947, but does not show any person with any variables of spelling of this name.

Hi I believe you are talking about my Great Uncle. As a child my late grandmother told me various stories about her brother who was a pilot in w.w.2. As you said he survived the war and as I recall, he became a test pilot. He crashed in a Mosquito and it caught fire, apparently he was a very tall man and could not get out of the ****pit and suffered horrific burns. He survived the crash but died of his injuries within a few days.

That's about all I can tell you. I can give you more family history if you wish to investigate this further.

My email add is alanblanche823@btinternet.com

Hi,
My Grandfather flew with a Lofty Seekings in 298 Sq. He was George Clarke and was the Flight Engineer. He flew with him at RAF Rufforth from April 1945 until Nov 1945 when they were based in India. Could this be the same person?

Paul.

This is a picture of my Grandad and his crew in India.

Left to right:
Lofty the Pilot, George my Grandad Flight Engineer, Sam 2nd Pilot, Wilf Wireless Operator, Charlie Navigator and Brian Bomb Aimer.

I have just read in my Grandads Memoirs that he bumped into Charlie in 1952 and told him Lofty had crashed and his plane destroyed by fire.

Some more about Edward Lofty Seekings. He was killed after his aircraft lost height on the approach, 1mile north of R.A.F Benson on August 23rd 1949. the aircraft was a Mosquito Reg number PF671. From 58sqn. From what I can make out there were 2 fatalities. It appears that they were taken to R.A.F Halton Hospital in Bucks. The report says aircraft destroyed by fire. Hope this is some help to you

Alan
