There were two other 40 Squadron deaths recorded on the Alamein Memorial for the same date which may, or may not, be linked to the loss of your grandfather:
- Abe Ittkin (a Canadian airman) - Arthur Kenyon
Two others, RA Atterton and PH Lay**** are named on the SFAX War Memorial; again these may, or may not, be linked (sorry the system won't let me put in the full name but it is Laycork (but the r needs to be changed to a c).
UPDATE: Having downloaded the ORB from National Archives I can confirm that your grandfather, along with the four names mentioned above, were lost in "Aircraft J" on 7th / 8th April 1943. Unfortunately neither of the ORB's (Form 540 and Form 541) provide an aircraft serial number so further research will be needed to try and track this down.
I hope this provides a useful start point and will enable others to find further details for you.
Regards
Pete
